This lesson is aimed at looking at how the monarchy’s power changed under Henry II. Students do a murder mystery activity looking at different sources about Thomas Becket’s murder and look at how the event challenged the power of the crown. This lesson works well after studying how William kept control.

There is a GCSE styled question with sentence starters for the less able. There are challenge tasks to stretch the top end.

Print off the evidence pack and either put it in an envelope or plastic wallet share them out between groups/tables. Make it a competition for students to work out the events of what happened.
