Take your students on a walk around this Inuit village with the difficult name. Step ashore in mid-July when the sun doesn't set. Become aware of the remoteness, the spectacular surrounding environment and the challenges of living in a village when 24 hour darkness exists for several months each year. Look around during your walk. Look at the sketch map and the photographs and then focus on the question. Considering the population trends shown in the population graph - can this village survive? This can be a standalone unit or it can link with the other titles in the remote Arctic settlement series. The question is designed for debate. Behind the question are issues of traditional survival and the impact of "the outside world" . Use the photographs, maps, graphs and text to gain ideas. You could use this at primary levels to indicate the environment of a cold place. At secondary levels you could go into more detail about environment, isolation, culture and trends. It's worth getting off the ship and going into the village.
