The Lab Book gives students opportunities to learn and gain competence in the Apparatus & Techniques, Practical & Mathematical, Practical Competency and Practical skills, to gain at least 15% of the marks in both the AS and A-Level examination papers.
It provides tasks for research, planning investigations, writing methods and risk assessments, producing tables, drawing graphs/bar charts, and analysing and evaluating their findings, in all cases using the AQA glossary of terms with their definitions.
In line with the CPAC requirements it details the 12 required practicals, with a further 36 practical opportunities with full methods. Sample results are provided for the less reliable practicals. A template for self, peer and teacher assessment follows each research and investigation task, with a summary table in which to track skills progression. Opportunities for development of mathematical skills are presented, as are sections of theory and exam questions relevant to the investigations and focusing on topics that are new or have a greater focus in the new specification. There are ‘cut & stick’ activities and a powerful DNA sequence analysis task.
