This is a resource that I have used with a few of my classes.
It contains a selection of Super Mario Bros characters that you can give students to enlarge and colour in.
I have included a word document with some background pieces as it helps to dress up a display of the finished works.

Don't take this the wrong way. I am a new teacher. Could someone suggest anything else we can do with this resource? I don't really think it's a somehow productive thing to just enlarge it and coloring in?
How much time does it usually take?

A couple of periods. Most enlargement stuff in the textbooks is just making very simple shapes larger. The video game characters are made up of more complex blocks and encourage the pupils to take their time and do it properly. I have a super mario display strip running the length of the classroom.
With a little bit of effort you can use the drawings to make nets for 3D shapes. I have done this with Minions and the Mushrooms from Mario. You just have to put the dimensions you need onto coloured card and have the pupils make the cuboids. Then you can either have them build it up layer by layer or save it as a surprise and have it made for them coming in the next day.
I am not trying to say that this is the best way to teach enlargement. It is not taking it as far as scale factors but it is an alternative to making a square 3 times the size.
At the end of the day it is what you make it and if you feel that it doesn't suit you or your class then don't use it.
