Ten Step Process for writing a description.
Students find it hard to write descriptions. There are lots of reasons for this. One way to help them write a quality description is to use a process. This process is described below together with steps which are explained and then demonstrated, step by step, using examples. Although the steps shown relate specifically to “Describe a Mountain Walk” they can be adapted to be used for describing any scenario.
The description starts as basic and is then re-written and added to and developed. The student will see the layers progress with the process of development so that it becomes like a plan to follow. However, the plan is there to shape a structure. Within that structure the student is encouraged to be as imaginative and creative as possible.
A good way to present the worked example is to have ten students stand at the front of the group. Student A reads Step 1 worked example and student B reads step 2 worked example and so on. In this way the students hear the layers being built up so that they can understand clearly how the development takes place.
