This PowerPoint lesson guides the class through the closing scene of The Merchant of Venice, considering the resonances of language of commerce, oath (and oath breaking) and reconciliation as well as a brief study of the rhetorical command and wit of Portia. Also considered are the closing references to harmony/music/romance as appropriate to the comedic ending, against the grim outcome for Shylock and the small hints of tragedy in the allusions to tragic romantic figures such as Medea and Dido. The lesson closes with a set of exam-style questions suitable for students studying GCSE AQA, Edexcel or OCR courses.
