Key Question : How did William gain control of England?

A range of resources providing approximately 4 lessons relating to the Norman Conquest. The underlying theme relates to how William 'solved' the problem of controlling a hostile population of about 3 million English with less than 10 thousand Normans. There is a problem-solving approach to how William dealt with his immediate problems following the Battle of Hastings and then his introduction of the Feudal System, Motte and Bailey Castles, dealing with rebellions and the Domesday Survey. The resources comprise: a central Power Point presentation (30 slides) for information and activities, supported by information sheets on William's problems and motte and bailey castles; assessment activities on Hereward the Wake and Domesday Book. There is an emphasis on source handling skills.
Key historical concepts: empathy, causation / consequences, historical significance, historical sources, interpretation, change (turning point in history); control, feudalism, conquest, castles, survey, taxation.
