This is a fully resourced scheme of work comprising of 30+ workshops for Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ at Key Stage 3. Created for Year 9 English as an active preparation for the 9-1 Edexcel IGCSE in English Literature. Due to the rehearsal room techniques used, the scheme is equally suitable for use in Key Stage 3 or GCSE drama. This scheme is unique in that it draws on the thematic intersection of race and the environment to offer parallels that appeal to Gen Z students. Thus, it will enable you to revitalise your teaching of ‘The Tempest’ by treating it as a performance text ripe for critical interrogation.

The scheme has the following features:

  • Use of the ensemble model - student companies created with unique identities
  • Initial, interim and final student voice surveys create opportunities for reflection on and adaptation of teaching
  • Teacher friendly, differentiated and vibrant workshop slides
  • Teacher notes provided on the scheme and slides for purposeful delivery
  • In depth lesson and activity plans for the critical approaches
  • Renaissance and contemporary contexts interwoven throughout (e.g. Elizabeth I’s ‘Draft Deportation Bill’ and Black Lives Matters protests)
  • Eco-drama enrichment day at the beach or park

My Philosophy

Teaching ‘through’ Shakespeare — making connections to our contemporary society — whilst remaining attendant to the play as performance text is an indispensable approach. I am motivated by the belief that a more enjoyable, thought-provoking and relevant experience with Shakespeare at KS3, will raise the profile of English and drama among the student body and lead to an uptake in English Literature and drama post-16.
