Suitable for KS5 statistics, S1 or S2. Let Excel take the strain while you explore the mean and variance for these dice. Sooner or later you are going to want to try out a little theory, in which case Sheet 3 of the spreadsheet could be a help.

This is a nice spreadsheet which allows students to explore the mean and variance of different shaped dice. They can manipulate the numbers to experiment and several questions are set for them to investigate. The solutions are included on tab 2. This is possibly too advanced for GCSE statistics but would be ideal for Stats1 at A-level. Sadly there is nothing in the way of teachers notes so I would recommend spending some time playing with the resource yourself before using. This would make an ideal lesson after introducing the concepts of mean, variance and expectation. Thank you for using.
