This is a bundle of resources I created to complement the book “Through the Magic Mirror” by Anthony Browne. I used this book as part of a larger series of lessons for an author study on Anthony Browne.
The unit was created for my Stage Two classroom but would work just as well with older students.
The book features the story of a fed-up boy named Toby who goes through a magic mirror and finds himself in an extraordinary, surrealist world. The art in the book is heavily influenced by the surrealism art movement, so I created an integrated Visual Arts/English unit, whereby students complete an art study on surrealism and contrast this with the artistic style of Anthony Browne.
The bundle contains:
-
teaching notes and a background to the unit
-
a comprehension guide with 12 targeted comprehension questions and associated printables, requiring students to dig deeply into the text
-
a focus on the artist Rene Magritte, whose art influenced Anthony Browne
-
a slideshow with a background to surrealism, featuring famous surrealist artists
-
10 literacy centre tasks cards designed to consolidate learning about both the text and the art focus.
