At Understanding Humanism our aim is to provide teachers with subject knowledge and resources to teach accurate, high-quality lessons about humanism and non-religious worldviews. We believe that every young person should have the opportunity to learn about humanism (a non-religious approach to life shared by millions in the UK) as part of an inclusive education about religion and worldviews and the wider curriculum. What is humanism? This information sheet for students aged 5+ explains the key features of humanism - a non-religious worldview or approach to life shared by millions of people in the UK and around the world. It can be used with the accompanying slide presentation to help children identify and understand the beliefs, values, and goals typically shared by humanists. It looks at how humanists understand the world and how they make decisions about the best way to act. This resource will help students to reflect on the humanist approach, to respond to it critically and creatively, and to consider similarities to, and differences from, their own and other worldviews. It will be invaluable to teachers exploring non-religious worldviews with their students as part of an inclusive RE/RVE.

The information sheet can be handed out to students to read themselves or shared with the class on a screen. It covers core knowledge about the humanist approach and includes three key things that humanists believe, and three ways that humanism differs from religions.
