Learn the science of snowflakes and why they always have 6 sides in this fun Christmas STEM activity

Our free resource designed to allow learners to use the theme of the Christmas period to develop their knowledge and skills in Mathematics, Design and Technology and Science. This lesson focuses on the science behind snowflakes and polar charge.

Oh ho ho, and please do share your snowflake highlights with us @IETeducation! #SantaLovesSTEM

On first look I thought this looked like a promising resource but it is full of errors and clearly not written by an expert. For example it says that water is made of two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule, rather than atoms. The description of what the author dubbs 'polar charge' is poor. I appreciate not wanting to introduce electronegatives to younger year groups but can at least say negative electrons are shared unequally between atoms giving rise to slightly positive and slightly negative areas on the molecule, rather than just electrons are present. The diagram showing full positive charge on all three atoms of the molecule is just wrong, both for showing full charge and for showing any kind of positive charge on oxygen. It also says hydrogen bonding is when hydrogen molecules are attracted to oxygen molecules!! One of the Pictures seems to show H3O molecules rather than H2O. I could go on. This PowerPoint will introduce and/or reinforce all sorts of misconceptions in your students. Promising idea for an activity but unusable without a fair bit of editing. Disappointing as would have expected more from the IET. Sorry!
