This unit of work was designed for Year 7 Art students. The format of the unit followed:

  1. Introduction of the project ‘Mask From Different Cultures’
  2. Explanation of ‘Tonal Shading’. Students to select 6 features from existing masks to demonstrate Tone understanding using pencil, pen
  3. Explanation of ‘Colour Tonal Shading.’ Students to apply knowledge to their mask drawing
  4. Explanation of the design process. Students to mind map theme ideas for their mask, students complete 3 initial designs.
  5. Students amalgamate ideas into one final refined design and add tone, colour, pattern and detail
  6. Demonstration of clay construction techniques. Students demonstrate own understanding in their clay mask designs.
  7. Demonstration of mixing and applying paint using blending techniques.
  8. Students add tonal colour using paint to their clay masks.
  9. Student evaluate their own and others work produced during this project.
