The resources are loosely based on the idea in the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books where students have the opportunity to select structural and language choices in their creative writing to decide which way their story goes.
Nine Lives Hall focuses on structure. After walking through the doors of Nine Lives Hall, students get to decide whether to select a change in narrative perspective or dialogue. Do they withhold information about a mysterious portrait or do they zoom in on detail? After getting trapped in a secret passageway, does the pace of their writing speed up or slow down? At the end of their story, they have the opportunity to self-assess their work and discuss their intentions as a writer. There are some helpful sentence starters, as well, adding more support as well as extension activities.
The Secret of Nine Crystals Cave has a similar layout but the focus is on language and different activities pertaining to the language choices made. Ideally, they are projects to be worked on independently at home as both resources have support and scaffolding to help students. If you have time to leave some feedback, I’d be really grateful. Thanks.
