Surface Area to Volume Ratio in Organisms

(0)
A PPT with complete lesson with different activities to introduce the idea of surface area and volume and how it is affected by the size of an organism. Activities include - calculating the surface area and volume of 3 cubes; explaining why certain cells/organs have a large surface area. There is also an edexcel IGCSE exam question and mark scheme for self assessment.

(I)GCSE Plant Transport - structure and function of xylem and phloem

(0)
A PPT which introduces the role of both xylem and phloem. The first activity is a research activity (8 minutes) where students use resources available to determine characteristics and roles of phloem and xylem. The next 20 minutes is a circus of activities with microscope work (drawing xylem and phloem); observing dye in celery; dendrochronology (tree rings) and transpiration and translocation.

TOPIC 4: PLANT STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION, BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION LEARNING GRID

A revision aid designed to support both higher and weaker students. Students have to read their textbook/notes to complete a grid of questions in specification order.Students can complete the grid to highlight areas they need to cover in more detail. Particularly supports ‘hands-on’ learners who need to write information down to absorb it Excellent as a homework task or directed study session Requires minimal preparation and interaction from the teacher - great for cover lessons! Teacher answer sheet provided

Check students learning with a series of focused questions on cells, reproduction and development. The main focus areas being cell structure; mitosis; meiosis; cell cycle; epigenetics and variation . 12 pages of questions with teacher answers. Students can self assess their work - a great starting point for revision before tackling exam questions. Questions vary in difficulty, supporting weaker students too.

A2 Structure and Function of the Mammalian Nervous System (3 lessons)

(0)
A2 Biology - The Nervous System covering the specification points: Know the peripheral nervous system is split into autonomic and somatic nervous systems; Understand why the autonomic system is split into sympathetic and parasympathetic systems; structure of the spinal cord; structure and function of `parts of the brain The power point contains the complete lesson including resources. There are individual and paired tasks for students plus exam questions to test understanding.

I have put together a transition booklet for my GCSE students to work through during the end of term and over the summer holidays. It includes a brief overview of the course; what students should know from GCSE; exam terminology to be familiar with; practical skills needed for next year; scientific article and questions; recommended reading for the summer

A2Biology: Drugs and Sport - including ethical issues and transcription factors

(0)
A whole lesson dedicated to looking at the effect of certain illegal substances and the ethical issues associated with drug taking in sports. I have included a debate where students sort through different opinions on drug taking in sports. This will help them formulate a for and against argument. I have also included information about how peptide and steroid hormones act as transcription factors and can activate protein synthesis. Finally, I have included the edexcel article from 2015 on drugs in sport and students can work through the article and answer the questions for homework.

9-1 IGCSE The Nervous System (4 lessons)

(0)
Lesson 1 covers the CNS, receptors and responses. It also introduces neurones and their role. Lesson 2 covers synapses and their structure/role in the nervous system Lesson 3 looks at the 3 types of neurones found in the CNS which will link into reflex arc Lesson 4 looks at the Reflex arc There are activities and assessments in each of the power point. There are also questions to generate a class discussion and check points.

Exam Analysis - Try this technique to help students highlight mistakes

(0)
We have started using this technique in our science department to allow students to highlight areas where they make mistakes. This could be due to misreading questions; not understanding the material; not understanding the questions; calculation questions or not using correct terminology. Once our students were aware of where the mistakes were being made, we gave them focused targets and it has helped improve their performance.

Edexcel specification link 6.5 (i) (ii) Two power point complete lessons focusing on the structure of viruses and bacteria. The second lesson looks at the lytic and lysogenic cycles with a short video clip on retrovirus reproduction - this will be looked at again when we study HIV. The lesson includes an exam question with mark scheme.
