General tips for students entering the AQA Language Paper 1 exam!

Great SOW designed as an interlude for KS3 Year 9s. The rationale behind this unit was to create a series of lessons which introduce pupils to the schools of thought used in literary criticism and covers the basics of Feminism, Marxism and Psychoanalysis. There is no expectation that you should complete all three, instead, choose to spend as long or as little time on each school of thought depending on the needs, abilities and interests of your class. In the long term, this unit would complement pupils when they begin their study of GCSE Literature texts and lays the foundations for literary criticism at GCSE and A-Level. The aim is for pupils to have the knowledge required to view their GCSE texts from each of these different lenses in the hope of deriving new, perceptive and interesting interpretations of the prose, poetry and drama they encounter at KS4.

Unseen poem target sheet to be used aftwer an unseen poetry assessment. It allows students to understand exactly what the did well and how they can level up in grade.

Excellent Descriptive Writing SOW if I don’t say so myself designed for KS3 Year 7 or Year 8. Short scheme of work (6 lessons) to aid creative writing. Students also look at a non fiction text and analyse features that engage the reader in order for students to use in their own writing.

Weekly spelling tests that could used as starters to ANY English lesson!

Short SOW (7 lessons) targeted at KS4 students teaching them exactly how to write persuasively and earn the best possible grade in AQA Language Paper 2 Section B (transactional writing). Could be used as revision in the lead up to exams or an introduction to crafting rhetoric.

This is a 8 slide PPT that has different extracts and 5 key questions that students need to answer in relation to. Great starter activity which could be use across all key stages, however designed for KS3.

This is a clear SOW (13 lessons) designed for KS3 Year 7s that fully encourages students to generate a number of ideas to develop for their own autobiography, read a number of autobiographies of famous and important people, develop some of their writing into a final piece of autobiography, edit and proofread their writing and write a final draft of part of their autobiography.

Excellent one off lesson to commemorate Stephen Lawrence on his day. Great for raising awareness about racism and police brutality! Very important for students learn and teaches them about social activism in poetry.

Nice little resource to aid Year 7 students with PEEL/PEAL/PETAL/however you want to call it paragraphs in essay writing!

Engaging SOW for The Boy in the Striped Pajamas for KS3 students. Works a treat! Filled with lots of PEEL practice and comprehension questions so that students not only understand, but know how to analyse texts in preparation for essay writing. 21 lessons in total!

This is a Word document filled up with books which are all amazing and I whole-heartedly recommend them. Some are a quick, easy read and some are demanding and will take time and focus. Recommended for Year 9s.
