Example text demonstrating dialogue writing with direct speech based on the historical novel Street Child by Berlie Doherty, set in Victorian London. The model text contains a conversation between Jim’s sisters, Emily and Lizzie, about the break-up of their family. Three differentiated versions of the text have been included for different ability levels. The model text can be used as a WAGOLL to examine using the differentiated Feature Find worksheets (answers included) before children attempt their own dialogue writing based on the book. Three animal-related activities where pupils must add punctuation to information texts about three animals: badgers, hedgehogs and spiders. Pupils must read the texts and add the missing punctuation, including the following: • Capital letters for the start of sentences • Capital letters for proper nouns • Full stops • Question marks • Commas in a list • Commas in compound sentences • Commas after fronted adverbials • Apostrophes for possession These tasks are useful when learning about or revising punctuation, including sentence punctuation. They contain a variety of fronted adverbial activities to develop pupils’ knowledge of fronted adverbials and improve their skills in using fronted adverbials in their writing.
