GCSE ITALIAN KS4 ITALIAN KS3 ITALIAN PRESENT TENSE ARE VERBS CONJUGATION PRACTICE FOCUS ON 25 HIGH-FREQUENCY ITALIAN -ARE VERBS My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. There are 150 conjugations across 3 differentiated conjugation challenges. I use these kinds of workbooks in lots of different ways: for practice during the introduction phase, for independent choice in class time, for home learning, for practice and revision during vacation and at return to class, and for cover lessons - they’re really versatile, and ideal for KS3 Italian students who are getting to grips with conjugation in Italian, and building their Italian verb vocabulary.
Though the workbook focuses solely on the correct conjugation of verbs, and does not look at word order in the context of full sentences, there are conjugation patterns that students can learn, recognise and apply, ensuring that their spoken and written Italian is accurate, and that their understanding of Italian across the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is robust.
The resource is structured as follows:
Two alphabetical verb reference lists: Italian-English and English-Italian.
Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations:
Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in Italian across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation.
Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in Italian, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in Italian.
Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding Italian verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt.

The workbook focuses on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. For example, students do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language, and the language they are learning, and those with English as a first language frequently look for a word that is the equivalent of would, until they familiarise themselves with the fact that the notion of conditional is indicated in the verb ending. I see this a lot with the future tense too, and tend to introduce both tenses quite closely together. It’s also easy to confuse the future tense endings with the conditional tense endings, and targeted practice helps to address that really well.

ADVANCED ITALIAN INTERMEDIATE ITALIAN CONJUGATION PRACTICE PLUPERFECT TENSE The workbook focuses on 25 high-frequency regular and irregular verbs Italian ARE verbs in the pluperfect tense (trapassato prossimo). There are three differentiated ‘quick conjugation’ challenges, each with 50 conjugation questions, so 150 conjugations in total. There’s also a 6-page answer key workbook - for me, answer keys are an integral element of the learning process with this kind of activity - they certainly help students develop more independence in their learning (and they do enjoy correcting their own and particularly each others’ work!), and they give students further opportunity to engage with the learning focus.

I think students appreciate the chance to try something new in lessons during the run-up to Christmas, and I always have several sets of vocab cards that they can revisit language we learnt earlier in the year - it really is the perfect time to practice and consolidate knowledge. The Christmas theme gets them feeling pretty festive, and they’re more than happy to work independently together, selecting the areas of vocab they feel they’d like to focus on. There are lots of games they enjoy playing, and I’ve described several that are really popular. The quiz works well as a whole-group quiz, but I always give my students a pdf version that they can load on to tablets to play the quiz in small groups if they prefer to do it that way.
The French vocabulary I’ve focused on here is a selection of:
Les salutations
Les jours de la semaine
Les mois de l’année
Les quatre saisons de l’année
Les nombres 0 à 31
Les couleurs
Quelques pays du monde

NEWLY-REVISED AND UPDATED RESOURCE WITH A THIRD CHALLENGE COMING FOR CHRISTMAS 2018!
Dotty Christmas Dominoes are a lively and festive alternative to more traditional vocabulary and grammar 'drilling' activities. They encourage students to focus on high-frequency verbs and help them identify cognates and faux amis, learning quite independently of the teacher - the activity really does help to create a lively language learning environment.
This resource features a further 99 high-frequency French verbs in the infinitive form, with their English equivalent. If you’ve got a particular focus on vocabulary and grammar, Sets 1 and 2 are also available as a bundle for £5.00 here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/dotty-christmas-dominoes-198-high-frequency-french-verbs-with-2-levels-of-challenge-11173737
There are two levels of challenge in this set:
CHILLOUT CHALLENGE, with the verbs in alphabetical order
CHAMPION CHALLENGE, with the verbs in topsy-turvy order – your students will really have to know their French verbs to create a perfect dominoe sequence!
The verbs are in the infinitive form in French & English, and reference sheets of all verbs in both alphabetical and topsy-turvy order are included – students can use these as a support resource, and they double as a whole-group pronunciation practice resource too.
I've classed the resource as suitable for Years 9-13, but it really does depend on the age at which your students begin their French learning, as well as the level they are currently at – and aspire to. They are definitely one for the visual and/or kinaesthetic learner.
The dominoes do take a bit of prep - printing & laminating. Laminating is certainly worth the effort and expense, as you will be able to re-use the cards for many Christmastimes to come.
The resource comprises a single pdf file. Please read the Terms of Use carefully – this resource is copyright, and for single-classroom use only.

PERFECT FOR CREATING AN INSTANT INTRODUCTION TO GERMAN NUMBERS IN YOUR PRIMARY GERMAN CLASSROOM - GREAT FOR READING, SPEAKING AND PRONUNCIATION PROMPTS TOO! These German Numbers 1-20 flashcards / posters create a fabulous German feel to your classroom. Using flashcards to introduce and practise language is a really successful directed teaching and learning activity. Giving your learning environment German ’look’ also promotes German as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of the school.
The posters / flashcards introduce learners to Numbers 1-20 in German from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with both the ‘look’ of German words, how those are represented in the written form, giving them the opportunity to begin to link spelling with sound in German. The posters work well with older students in their first German lessons too! I use the posters for spelling and mental maths games in German, and vocab quizzes too - the font is definitely big enough to be seen from all over the classroom. I also use the German-theme images to promote discussion about life in Germany, German traditions and so on, really getting the most from the learning display posters.
There are two backgrounds to choose from - German flag or black wave, so 40 posters/flashcards in total.

They enjoy being able to work and learn independently, and I give them regular chances during the school year to play. The focus is on 99 high-frequency GERMAN verbs in the infinitive form. There are 3 games, each with a differentiated level of challenge.
CHILLOUT CHALLENGE features the verbs in alphabetical order, GERMAN to English
CHAMPION CHALLENGE features the verbs in topsy-turvy order, GERMAN to English
SUPERCHARGED CHALLENGE features the verbs in topsy-turvy order, ENGLISH to GERMAN - your students will really have to know their GERMAN verbs to complete this sequence in record time!
I’ve included reference sheets of all verbs in both alphabetical and topsy-turvy order for students to use as a learning support resource.
I’ve classed the game as suitable for ages 11-18, because it really does depend on when your students begin GERMAN - the games work well with any appropriate year group, depending on their starting point. There’s a bit of prep - printing and cutting out. I always laminate my dominoes games because they last for years, so laminating is definitely worth the time and effort.

NEWLY-UPDATED POSTERS COMING SOON! PRIMARY FRENCH YEAR 7 FRENCH ANIMALS FLASHCARDS POSTERS
**CREATE AN INSTANT INTRODUCTION TO THE ANIMAL KINGDOM IN YOUR CLASSROOM IN FRENCH - PERFECT FOR READING, SPEAKING AND PRONUNCIATION PROMPTS TOO! **
This set of 20 A4 portrait posters offers a great introduction to the animal kingdom in FRENCH. The posters also create a fabulous FRENCH feel and look to your learning environment, as a ‘general’ display, or for when you are focusing specifically on animals in your FRENCH lessons. They’re useful as a visual prompt for gender and indefinite article, and work really well as flashcards too. It doesn’t matter if some of the animals don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the posters give learners daily opportunities to engage with the written FRENCH word, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words and cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in FRENCH. They’re a great prompt for cross-curricular learning too, particularly when learners are exploring the animal kingdom and habitats in science.
