I give my students of all grades and learning phases a whole series of reference lists, that build up into a really comprehensive reference bank over the course of their German program. They’re really popular with my students, as they know they can just go to their reference file or folder, and find what they need. They tell me that they feel far more confident about their German when they have a good grasp of core vocab. They’re great for quick vocab quizzes too.
There are two alphabetical lists - one German-English, and one English-German, as I’ve found that beginner German students prefer to have both as a reference resource. I’ve noted where a verb is separable, irregular or conjugated with sein. If my group is small, I provide students with a set of double-sided and laminated reference resources. My students all have a reference file or folder, again from the beginning of their learning, and part of helping them develop independence in, and responsibility for, their learning, is to give them opportunity to keep their learning resources in good order, and easily accessible.
The verbs are all in the infinitive form - it’s an important step in learning is to ensure that students quickly develop a useful vocabulary bank, are able to recognize high-frequency German verbs, and are confident with the meaning of those verbs in English - at that point we can move swiftly on to looking at conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context. We also use our reference lists to help students audit their developing German verb vocabulary.
The list is a great time-saver for teachers too - if you’re preparing resources focusing on high-frequency German verbs for your students, the list is a good starting point.

PRIMARY ITALIAN KS3 ITALIAN BEGINNER ITALIAN NUMBERS 0-21 WORD WALL It’s really easy to create an instant introduction to numbers 0-21 in Italian with this set of word wall cards. They’re really useful during the numbers introduction phase, and I also use my word walls for developing language skills and awareness in general. I like to do number guessing and calculation games at regular intervals too.
There are two cards per 8.5 x 11 (A4) page in landscape format - the words are definitely big enough for children to be able to read from various locations in the classroom, so that we can really get the most of our learning word wall - we do lots of***guessing and spelling games, and quick vocab quizzes*** for example. This German word wall display creates an instant introduction to the days of the week and the months and seasons of the year in German, and really brightens up the learning environment too. I like to share essential vocab that we can use in everyday language with my young learners from the beginning of their learning. We use them not only when we’re introducing and practising days, months and seasons, but also for developing German language skills and awareness in general. We talk a lot about the similarities and differences in the different languages, such as the use of capital letters, and we look very closely for cognates too. These are ideal for both the Primary German classroom, as well as the Year 7 German / beginner high school German classroom.

25 high-frequency French verbs, listed alphabetically French-English and English-French ideal as a year-round reference resource, and students find it particularly useful for exam revision, whether working in class time or at home. It’s useful for advanced beginner French students to provide a language learning map and for intermediate French students who are working with more complex language and texts, including authentic resources, and as a vocabulary audit and enrichment.
The verbs are all in the infinitive form and feature high-frequency French verbs that I work with in the advanced beginner to intermediate stages of my French learning programs. It’s important in language learning to ensure that students quickly develop a useful French verb vocabulary bank, are able to recognize high-frequency French verbs, and are confident with the meaning of those verbs in their first or home language. At that point students can move swiftly on to looking at conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context, enabling them to produce more detailed and descriptive language. This is an integral element to successful language learning.
Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning long lists of verbs or other vocabulary all at once though: frequent and regular use in real-world practical contexts is far more successful at embedding vocabulary into longer-term memory. I also use the books for quick vocabulary quizzes, again at frequent and regular intervals - I simply shout out the French or English verb, the first student or team to shout out the correct answer wins a point. I’ve found this to be a really successful alternative to more formal vocabulary testing.

I like to share essential beginner French vocabulary that I can use in everyday talk with my young learners from the beginning of their French learning programme. The key focus is on the definite article, both masculine and feminine, singular and plural, though I do use the set to start to compare these with the indefinite article, which I’ve found to be a really successful way of helping students embed grammatical concepts such as gender, implicitly, without the need for repeated explicit instruction.
We use the set not only when we’re introducing and practising French vegetables, but also for developing French language skills and awareness in general. Students are able to familiarize themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. I don’t actually introduce 25 vegetables at once, but in my classroom decor, I generally have additional language to maximize students’ exposure to related vocabulary.

PRIMARY GERMAN KS3 GERMAN ANIMALS DEUTSCHE TIERE FLASHCARDS POSTERS These German animals display posters / flashcards create a fabulous German look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote German as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of German. They introduce learners to a range of animals in German from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how German words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. My younger German students really love the animals posters, and like to compare the German and English words. I’ve found that they also help very young children develop their growing understanding of the animal kingdom. We don’t necessarily learn all the animals, but we do use them for pronunciation and speaking practice, and for memory games too. Students definitely notice the different words for the, and ask why some animals are der, and others are die or das. I’ve used this as a useful prompt to introduce the concept of gender.
Use them as flashcards to introduce and practise language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating.
There are 20 animals using the masculine, feminine and neuter definite article, which again is a great opportunity to begin to compare German and English, looking particularly closely at capitalization of nouns. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as Bär and Wolf.

These French speaking prompts are perfect for developing speaking skills in French - there are 100 question and answer cards and a reference book aimed at KS3 French moving into KS4 French, with a specific focus on French reflexive verbs in the present tense.
The cards are also great for multi-skill language learning - they give students structured talk opportunities and will also get them listening, reading and writing. They’re ideal for independent learning, and perfect for pair and small-group work - my students frequently select the speaking and writing cards for their free-choice learning activity.
The reference book includes all the questions and answers written out in French. Students find it a very useful learning support resources and it’s also handy for whole-group pronunciation and reading-out loud practice. Students use the Ideas, Notes and Next Steps template to reflect on their learning, and think about what they might reasonably do to progress in their learning - we use this to guide and inform discussions we have as a whole-group about where students think they are at the moment, and what they think they might like to work a little more on. They also jot down ideas for their own question and answers that they create for each other.
The question and answer card writing templates give students the opportunity to apply their French practically, as they create both questions and answers for each other, using the reference book as a form of writing frame to help them form their language correctly. This is a great team activity too. We also use the cards for a whole range of games, and I’ve described how to play several you can start with that work really well for us.

KS3 ITALIAN GCSE ITALIAN KS4 ITALIAN DATES DAYS MONTHS SEASONS CHALLENGE CARDS are perfect for KS3 Italian, and really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of this essential Italian vocabulary in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling in Italian in general, and certainly in***Italian dates, days, months and seasons*** in particular. PRIMARY LATIN KS3 LATIN ANIMALS FLASHCARDS POSTERS These Latin animals flashcards / display posters create a fabulous Latin look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote Latin as a real language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of Latin. They introduce learners to a range of animals in Latin from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarise themselves with how Latin words ‘look’, and how they are represented in the written form. My younger Latin students really love the animals flashcards / posters, and when we look for cognates and near-cognates, they really like to compare the Latin and English words. I’ve found that they also help very young children develop their growing understanding of the animal kingdom.
Use them as flashcards to introduce and practice language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating.
There are 20 masculine, feminine and neuter animals. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as ursus and lupus. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from their first language, helps learners become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts in both languages, which I’ve found to be really useful for both current and later learning.
The animals are:

Games with goals: these French fruits and vegetables bingo games are ideal for young beginner French learners.
This bundle features two sets of bingo games, with 12 fruits and 12 vegetables in masculine, feminine, singular and plural forms respectively. The games are ideal for developing listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling skills in French, as well as learning key beginner French vocabulary.
There are 360 bingo grids and 80 calling cards in this bundle, everything you need for lots of games with all your students. All the grids are designed for all the squares to be crossed off in order to win the game, and depending on the size of your class, there can be several winners per game. The grids with pictures are in both colour and BW: colour looks great, and I laminate these for class, using them with wipe-clean pens so that they can be recycled for years. The BW versions work really well for quick games - print and go!
Each set features 12 fruits and 12 vegetables respectively, and I’ve found this to be a reasonable and manageable number for young learners.

I have folders ready with lots of different bingo grids in them, so that they are good to grab and go whenever students select them, or I decide it’s time for a quick practice and refresh session. I distribute the grids in a variety of ways, for example students get a random selection of pages, and they select the order of grids they play from. Students can also cut out the grids, and place them in a small bowl or similar object on tables, and then select individual grids randomly.

KS3 LATIN PRIMARY LATIN BINGO LATIN VEGETABLES 100 DIFFERENTIATED BINGO GRIDS & 40 CALLING CARDS Children absolutely love to play bingo - it’s perfect for language learning. These Latin vegetables bingo games are differentiated, with varying degrees of challenge, and a multi-skill focus.
I’ve selected the following vegetables, and I always include a mix of masculine, feminine, neuter, singular and plural, as I’ve found this a great way of helping beginner Latin students develop their familiarity with basic grammatical concepts:
