The product is free to download, but Terms of Use still apply. Encouraging students to speak can be quite challenging in the languages classroom, and I’ve found that even my more advanced learners can be quite reluctant, especially if the group is fairly large. I use a range of strategies to promote speaking, and idioms, proverbs and fun expressions which sound quite strange when translated literally are really popular - for example, we have regular competitions to see who can get the most idioms or expressions into dialogues and conversations. This works really well for students of all stages and ages. The posters show the literal translation, which generally sounds very odd, such as this particular idiom C’est pas tes oignons! - It is not your onions! and the correct corresponding translation. We also discuss other possible translations into English, which helps them understand the concept of translation, and that there are potentially many correct ways of expressing meaning accurately. The posters also lend the learning environment a real French ambiance, promoting the everyday use of French. There are two backgrounds to choose from - French flag flag, or plain. The product is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, shared or distributed outside your own in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user licence only. Please read the Terms of Use. French Numbers 0-31 Task Cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of French numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping beginner French students familiarise themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words in French. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on French Numbers 0-31, but also for sub lessons, as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn how to count in French, but also to enjoy working with French, and to feel confident about doing so. All questions are in French, and range in complexity and challenge, both in terms of language and number skills. I’ve used visual prompts such as math symbols to ensure all learners can engage with the questions, and this helps them to begin to infer meaning from context, and to decode cues and prompts to foster understanding. I don’t allow the use of calculators to increase the challenge a little. Some questions focus specifically on French math language, which students do not always engage with very often. The level of math is fairly simple, but certainly draws on prior number and arithmetic learning. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and arithmetic creatively and practically, which is integral to successful language learning. My students also genuinely enjoy creating questions for each other. The set comprises the following non-editable files: 48 differentiated question cards, 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper; laminate if possible 2-page answer recording sheet 2-page answer key Try this French Numbers 0-31 Task Cards freebie to see if this kind of activity would work well for your students: FRENCH NUMBERS 0-31 : 12 TASK CARDS FREEBIE https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-numbers-0-31-task-cards-freebie-12930004 Have a browse in my store for more French independent learning activities, and a wide range of other French teaching and learning materials, with French dollar deals, special offer bundles, and lots of freebies. My students have always found these a really useful learning activity. With the structured speaking prompts, they are able to develop confidence in their speaking, working independently in pairs or small groups. At the same time, they are building their vocabulary and enhancing their understanding and knowledge of***French grammar*** too. There are 15 questions with 15 suggested responses. As students become more confident and competent, they begin to rely less on the prompt cards, and answer questions in their own way - and even ask them differently too, if their talk partner is using the answer card as the main prompt. The questions in this freebie are aimed at advanced beginner to intermediate French students, though my more advanced students enjoy ‘going back to the start’ too, particularly near exam time. There’s a reference sheet, with all the questions and answers written out in full - I always provide a reference resource, and my students like to keep them in their learning folders for longer-term reference. When they create their own questions and answers for each other on the question and answer card template, they also find them really useful as a form of writing frame. Perfect for developing German language skills in general, as well as for practicing and revising numbers 0-31 in German - there are 12 differentiated questions, answer key and recording sheet. I’ve found that Christmas is a great time to revisit language we started with a couple of months before, and these are ideal for that. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities. Challenge cards are really versatile too - we use them not only when we’re focusing on the target vocab, but throughout the year as starters and refreshers. The goal is not simply to learn and practice how to count in German, but also to enjoy working with language, and to feel confident about doing so. The questions range in complexity and challenge, and are great for honing numeracy skills too - especially if calculators are not allowed. There is a range of Christmas-theme images as visual clues for learners, Knecht Ruprecht and Weihnachtsmann - most of the questions are in German, so it’s really important to give learners appropriate support, and they’re great for stimulating discussion about German Christmas traditions and vocabulary. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. 25 high-frequency German verbs in the imperfect tense. The quick conjugations have always been really popular with my students, who find them a great way of practising, reinforcing and revising how to conjugate essential verbs in German. I’ve used them in a range of contexts too, such as independent work either in class time or at home, holiday refresher work, or individual activities for cover lessons. I give my students regular opportunities to work through the same conjugations until they feel confident about how German conjugation ‘works’, and are able to recognize patterns and so predict conjugation accurately. The workbook is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: German-English and English-German. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in German across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in German, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in German. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding German verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. Notes and Next Steps sheet, which encourages students to think about how their understanding of German conjugation works, what progress they have made, what their targets for improvement might realistically be, and what they might reasonably do in order to meet those targets. We also use it to guide and inform whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which is a really popular and effective activity too. It’s also a great place to note any additional high-frequency verbs that students learn, and this helps to build up a really strong verb vocabulary bank. answer key Try this free conjugation sampler to see if it’s the kind of learning activity that will work well for your students: GERMAN CONJUGATION PRACTICE FREE SAMPLER https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/german-conjugation-practice-sampler-12149140 Have a browse in my store for more German grammar activities, and a wide range of other German teaching and learning resources, with dollar deals, special offer bundles, and lots of freebies too! I’ve found that having new and high-frequency language displays also helps promote German as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of German learners. The posters help students familiarize themselves with how German words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. The font is big enough for students to read in various locations in the classroom - I find this really important so that we can get the most out of any particular display - for example we use them for pronunication practice, spelling and mental calculation games at certain points in the lesson. There are two backgrounds to choose from - German flag or black wave. Laminate or print on card stock - I always do this with my displays - they hang a lot better, and I recycle them for many years. There are 18 breakfast items in this word wall - we may not actually have all the items in our learning plan, but we use them for developing language skills and awareness in general. I’ve used the definite article, a range of masculine, feminine and neuter, singular and plural. We look at cognates and near cognates, and discuss breakfast, and what we like to eat, or we’d like to try - it’s important to use word walls as a real learning resource, not just to use them as a visual display - for example, I use them for vocab guessing games or quizzes, and spelling games. I rotate word walls regularly, ‘going back’ to language we met at earlier points in the school year. The breakfast items are: = bacon = yoghurt = cup of coffee = cereal = jam = pancakes = croissant = waffles = porridge = orange juice = milk = boiled egg & boiled eggs (useful for looking at singular/plural differences) = fried egg = toast = bread rolls = syrup = tea There are two headers: Guten Appetit! and Das Frühstück- creating their own headers, or adding to the items is a great language learning activity too. There are two cards per 8.5 x 11 (A4) page in landscape format - the words are definitely big enough for children to be able to read from various locations in the classroom. There are two backgrounds to choose from - German flag or black wave. I always print my word walls on robust card stock and/or laminate, because they hang really well, and last for absolutely years! They really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of this essential beginner German vocabulary in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, entirely independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling in German in general, with grammatical concepts such as adjectival endings, definite and indefinite articles in the nominative, accusative, genitive and dative and word order, and certainly in ***German dates, days, months and season***s in particular. The questions are entirely in German, with some translation questions both from German into English, and English into German. It’s important to help students understand as soon as possible that translation does not mean simply exchanging word for word, and that languages do work in different ways to express the same things. The resource comprises the following non-editable files: 36 differentiated question cards, 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper answer recording sheet - I usually have my students use their class workbooks to note answers, and use recording sheets for more formal assessment purposes. answer key vocabulary reference sheet Try this freebie: GERMAN DATES, DAYS, MONTHS & SEASONS TASK CARDS FREEBIE https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/german-dates-days-months-seasons-task-cards-freebie-12782114 Have a browse in my store for more German task cards, and a wide range of other German teaching and learning materials, with German dollar deals, special offer bundles and lots of freebies. Please read the Terms of Use. 25 high-frequency reflexive verbs, 150 conjugation questions, 3 differentiated challenges, answer keys & verb lists My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. The workbook is really versatile, and ideal for advanced intermediate French and advanced French A students who are working with more complex language and texts, including authentic texts, which feature a broad range of tenses. It focuses on the mechanics of conjugation, rather than usage, and I’ve found that when my students are able to provide the correct conjugation very quickly, and out of a specific context, they feel really confident that their conjugation skills are developing well. I use these kinds of workbooks in lots of different contexts - homework, holiday refresher and revision work, sub lessons and so on. French reflexive verbs can be quite tricky, particularly for students whose first language does not have a similar reflexive verb group. Though the workbooks focus solely on the correct conjugation of verbs, and does not look at word order in the context of full sentences, there are conjugation patterns that students can learn, recognise and apply, ensuring that their***spoken and written French*** is accurate, and that their understanding of French across the***skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing*** is robust. The resource has the following structure: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: French-English and English-French. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in French across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in French, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in French. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding French verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. Notes and Next Steps encourages students to think about where they are now, how confident they feel, and what they might need to work on a little more to be absolutely sure of their conjugation skills. answer key MERCI BEAUCOUP ET BONNE CONJUGAISON !

Please read the Terms of Use carefully. 66-page written recall workbook 400 French adjectives, French-English and English-French, with four written recall challenges. My students find the written recall challenges really useful throughout the school year, and particularly as we approach exam time - they generally like to work at their own pace, either in class time or at home. Students can challenge themselves multiple times, simply by covering over previous responses, which means we’re able to get a lot of use from a single book, saving both prep time and paper. The workbook is ideal for advanced French students, and as a refresher and vocabulary audit for those moving into KS5 A Level French. For UK teachers, these are roughly GCSE / Standard / age 16 examinations moving into advanced level, all examination boards (AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, SQA). There are four written recall challenges in the workbook: Written Recall Challenge One all four hundred adjectives in alphabetical order French-English - students are prompted for the English translation of a French adjective Written Recall ChallengeTwo this challenge also requires students to write the English translation from a French prompt, but the adjectives are in random, rather than alphabetical order - students often learn new vocabulary in alphabetical order, so this can be great practice in recall Written Recall Challenge Three the four hundred adjectives are in alphabetical order English-French - students give the French translation of an English adjective Written Recall Challenge Four with this challenge, the English adjective prompts are in random order, and students give the French translation The challenges work well together, and we do revisit them regularly over quite a long period of time. When students are very focused on particular vocabulary, they’re able to embed the vocabulary really successfully, and feel confident using it in a wide range of contexts. It’s useful to work on creative writing in French regularly too, so that students can apply their French practically, and I encourage them to use a wide range of adjectives, thinking about synonyms too. MERCI BEAUCOUP ET BON APPRENTISSAGE !
