How to use this resource:
Download and print the lesson plan and game materials.
Follow the step-by-step instructions in the lesson plan to introduce the concept of the distributive property and connect it to the 7 times table.
Use the manipulatives and activities to solidify understanding.
Play the multiplication game to reinforce learning in a fun and interactive way.
Use the exit tickets to assess student comprehension.
How it works:
For those who struggle to recall times tables, it is useful to provide strategies to help them to calculate the answer efficiently. This can be done by building on the table known as key facts: 1x, 2x, 5x and 10x tables.
This resource introduces the concept using cards which have counters arranged in groups of 7, repeated addition, multiplication and finally the solution. This thinking can easily be extended to find solutions outside the normal times tables e.g. 15 x 7 can be calculated using (10x7) + (5x7).
When students are comfortable using the cards to support the 7x table, they can use the 5x + 2x method to complete the 7x table row of the multiplication chart.

Looking for a fun and engaging way to teach your students about UK coins? This set of loop cards is perfect for reinforcing coin recognition and money calculations.
Challenge and excite your students with this set of 36 money loop cards. “I have …” “Who has …?” Your students will love getting up and moving around in maths class to work out the value of the coins on their card to match it to a “Who has …?” statement. If the whole group answers correctly, the play will return to the student who read out their first card. A fun way to practise adding coins up to the value of £1.
Bonus Activity:
Cut off the “Who has …?” section from each card. The coins on the cards have a matching one that creates a sum to £1. Students can find a friend whose coins, when added to theirs, make exactly £1. A fun way for selecting random partners in class too!
Alternative use:
The cards could be placed around the room and students could work in pairs or small groups to complete the loop.

Are you looking for fall-themed activities for your students? These free ten-frame cards feature 2 designs, each with a blank ten frame and a filled ten frame. Also in colour and black and white. Perfect to support your Foundation phase maths.
Benefits of using ten frames for students:
Visualizing Numbers: Ten frames give your students a concrete way to see numbers. Instead of just memorising names and order, they can arrange counters on the frame to physically represent quantities. This helps them develop a deeper understanding of what numbers mean.
Composing and Decomposing Numbers: By adding or removing counters on the ten frame, your students can see how numbers can be broken down (decomposed) into smaller parts and built up (composed) from smaller parts. This lays the foundation for addition and subtraction skills.
Stronger Number Sense: Ten frames help your students develop a strong number sense. This means they can understand relationships between numbers, like how close a number is to 5 or 10. This is a crucial foundation for future maths learning.
What’s Inside
Ten frames for 0 to 10 (4 per page)
