Autograph Video 18 - Angle at the Centre - Twist!

(1)
The 18th in Mr Barton's Autograph Video tutorial series. Whilst we are on a roll with the Angle at the Centre Theorem, why not have a quick look at a nice little twist? We can use Autograph to set up some circumstances where the theorem doesn't seem to work. Has maths been broken, or can your students figure out what is going on?... Below the video you will find an option to download it and play it on a larger screen, or by clicking on the web-link you can see all the videos in this series.

Mr Barton's Web Whizz Video 21 - Maths Blogs

The 21st in a series of videos where each week I visit my favourite mathematics websites. My number one source for keeping up to date with all the latest developments in maths resources and ideas are blogs. A load of them have sprung up over the last twelve months, and their quality is absolutely unbelievable. In this video we take a quick look at some of my favourites, including posts about flipped classrooms, thoughts and crosses, teaching crushes, World Maths Day and so much more. And can I personally say thank you to all the kind, talented, dedicated and generous people who run them.

Gapminder Video 11 - Gapminder and Autograph

The 11th in Mr Barton's Gapminder World Video series. In this video, we fuse together two of my favourite things - Gapminder World and Autograph. We see how we can process the data from Gapminder using Autograph's powerful statistical engine in order to anyalse the strength of correlation. More statistical diagrams next week! Below the video you will find an option to download it and play it on a larger screen, or by clicking on the web-link you can see all the videos in this series

Mr Barton's Web Whizz Video 13 - Advent Calendar

The 13th in a series of videos where each week I visit my favourite mathematics websites. We return to the NRICH website to have a look at their annual offering of an advent calendar. But this is not your usual advent calendar because behind each door instead of a chocolate treat you will find… a mathematical treat! One lovely problem for each of the days leading up to Christmas. NRICH produces the goods once again. Ho, ho, ho!

Autograph Video - Competition Winner!

This is the video from the 2011 Autograph/TSM Competition winner, Damian Watson. In it he shows us a great way of using Autograph to look at the meaning of the constants in quadratic equations. As a result of his video, Damian has won a place at this year's TSM Conference in Oundle in July. Congratulations! Click on the weblinks for more details of the conference and for more videos.

Gapminder Video 8 - Labour Force Participation

The 8th in Mr Barton's Gapminder World Video series. What percentage of males aged 15 to 64 are employed in countries across the world? What regions have the highest levels of employment? Is it to do with wealth or tradition? How about if we look at females aged 15 to 64? Lots of questions that need answering by Gapminder World! Below the video you will find an option to download it and play it on a larger screen, or by clicking on the web-link you can see all the videos in this series

Gapminder Video 10 - Employment Rates

(1)
The 10th in Mr Barton's Gapminder World Video series. This week we take a look at Employment Rates around the world. Is it the case that the richer you are, the higher proportion of your population are in work? And how about if we just look at 15-24 year olds? Below the video you will find an option to download it and play it on a larger screen, or by clicking on the web-link you can see all the videos in this series

Autograph Team - Creating Pin Boards

A video from the Autograph team. There may be some occasions when you want to prepare a file in advance of the lesson. For example Pin Boards are great for geometrical reasoning but the construction is not very helpful. Clicking on the web-link below takes you to all the videos in this series.

Mr Barton's Web Whizz Video 17 - Murderous Maths

The 17th in a series of videos where each week I visit my favourite mathematics websites. This week it is the turn of the Murderous Maths Website, which is the online home of the excellent Murderous Maths series of books. Just like the books, this site is absolutely crammed packed full of fascinating maths tricks, features and activities. I pick out a couple of my favourites, and also suggest a way that this website could be used for an interesting maths project with your pupils.

Mr Barton's Web Whizz Video 19 - Maths History

(0)
The 19th in a series of videos where each week I visit my favourite mathematics websites. Mathematics has one of the richest, most interesting histories of all the subjects, full of sparks of genius and shady goings on, and yet this is largely something that students are ignorant of. The wonderful Mac Tutor History of Mathematics website can rectify all of this, providing a comprehensive catalogues of all the big (and not so big) names in Mathematics. And what’s more, they even have a Twitter feed so you can get updated with the Mathematician of the Day every day of the year!

MEI - Co-ordinate Geometry - Autograph

(0)
MEI has kindly shared the following resources to support the use of ICT in A/AS Level maths. These are practical activities that look at how we can use Autograph to enhance the study of co-ordinate geometry, predominantly at AS level. These are ideal for use in a computer room or for students to investigate at home. The pdf file contains full instructions and challenges, and the attached Autograph files can be used to demonstrate and consolidate understanding back in the classroom. Please click on the web-link to find out more about the work of MEI.

Autograph Activity - Gradient of Straight Lines

An Autograph Player activity to investigate the gradients of straight line graphs. You can use this activity on the interactive whiteboard, or for your students to investigate on their own. Autograph does not need to be installed to use this activity (so your students can even use it at home), but you will need to install the free Autograph Player add-on (instructions given after clicking the link). For a full list of Autograph Activities, please click on the other web-link.

The 15th in a series of videos where each week I visit my favourite mathematics websites. Anyone who knows me or has watched my videos will know I am slightly obsessed with Statistics. My teaching of statistics has been revolutionised by Gapminder World and Guardian Data Blog, and now here comes another absolutely fantastic statistical website. With Nationmaster you can very quickly and clearly make comparisons between countries using thousands of interesting, up to date statistics.

Kangaroo Maths is a website that is quite literally bursting with free, high-quality content. In this video we barely scratch the surface, focussing on three excellent series of resources: Bring on the Maths – rich, classroom activities to challenge students’ misconceptions; Convinced – a series of worksheets that push students’ understanding of a topic; and Maths to Infinity – high quality Excel worksheets to generate as many questions as you could possible desire. Thank you Kenny the Kangaroo!

Mr Barton's Web Whizz Video 22 - Get the Math!

(0)
The 22nd in a series of videos where each week I visit my favourite mathematics websites. Two issues that I regularly face in my teaching are: 1) trying to think of relevant, engaging activities to hook the students in and 2) making effective use of any computer room lessons I am lucky enough to secure. The Get the Math website might just solve both of these problems. It contains three detailed, rich, engaging, interactive activities about how mathematics is used in the real world. The one we look at in details concerns two hip-hop artists whose drum-beat and sample are not in time.

Throughout the academic year of 2011 to 2012, each week I have taken viewers on a very quick tour of some of my favourite mathematical websites. I have tried to find new ways of using the familiar names, and also attempted to uncover some hidden gems along the way. And what a collection of websites they have been! We have seen websites to spice up every conceivable topic, from statistics to algebra, using everything from top trumps to sampling hip-hop tracks. In this video we take a look back at some of the websites featured in this year’s WebWhizz video collection.
