Includes full instructions for all versions plus an extension activity whereby students have to correct the passage. Suitable for use as a revision activity, intervention work, starter or plenary. Will help identify student misconceptions. Can be completed as a competitive game.
instructions:
Hidden amongst many the lies are 5 hidden truths. The objective is to find them.
• Individual (5 mins):
Students should read the passage and highlight or underline the 5 hidden truths.
• Pairs or Teams (10 mins):
One person reads the passage with the truths highlighted in bold to their partner or teammates; intonating and pausing for effect to try and trick the other players. When one of the listeners thinks they have heard a true statement; they must either say ‘”truth” or raise their hand. If they are correct; they receive a point. If they are incorrect; the reader receives a point. For every truth the reader successfully smuggles; the reader also receives a point at the end of passage when they reveal the answers to the other players.
• Whole Class (10 mins):
The class can try to beat their teacher as the teacher reads the passage and the class listens carefully. Students should raise their hands if they think they hear a truth. Points are awarded as above to either the teacher or the class.
Alternatively the teacher can read the passage and students silently list any true statements they hear; at the end of the passage the teacher can reveal the answers and students can self-assess; awarding themselves a mark out of 5 (one for each correctly identified truth).
• Extension (15 mins):
Correct the false statements (paragraphs could be shared between students).
