This lesson looks encourages the students to explain the ideas they have been taught about WHY there was a lack of progress in the ideas about how disease was caused in the Medieval period 1250-1500. Students are provided with an outline of the reasons and helpful information about how to structure a 12 mark answer based on this question.
The lesson includes a recap from previous learning, a focussed starter task, background information about the wider historical context, a set of learning tasks which are differentiated for higher and lower ability, extention task/s, a focus on the exam with a 12 mark question, a review (plenary) and finally a fact sheet which can be used as a replacement for any books.

This lesson takes a look at the people who were available to treat the sick in Medieval Britain. The main task gets the students to ‘interview’ each form of treatment and rate aspects such as ‘availability’ and ‘cost’ before the student evaluates the more effective treatment available at that time.

This lesson specifically examines the main reasons why the Montgomery Bus Boycott was successful in achieving its aim of desegregating buses in 1956. As well as other activities, students will then have an opportunity to answer a 12 mark practice exam question on this topic.

This lesson looks at the methods used to transport the injured soldiers from the frontline to hospitals. It has a focus on the problems and challenges presented by the environment of the Western Front.

This is the final lesson for the unit. It cover the events that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the following consequences. It will also ask the students to explain the importance of the fall of the Berlin Wall for the end of the Soviet Union by 1991.
RECAP 1: A 10 question multiple choice quiz about why the Berlin Wall was built to help recap prior knowledge from an earlier lesson. Answers revealed on the following slide (see image).
RECAP 2: Students are presented with 5 images which they must use to identify the actions that Mikhail Gorbachev had taken from the previous lesson to bring about the end of the Cold War (Brezhnev Doctrine, Afghanistan, Perestroika, Glasnost, INF Treaty). Students prompted into discussion and explanation to recap his actions.
STARTER: Students given two sources (written and visual) and have to infer what each tells them about the immediate impact of the fall of the Berlin Wall on the citizens of East Berlin.
BACKGROUND SLIDES: Gives a stage by stage overview of the events which led to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
TASK SHEET: Students prompted through a series of tasks which lead to explaining the main consequences and the importance of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Extension tasks given.
EXAM QUESTIONS: Three types of exam questions given for this topic.
FACT SHEETS: A fact sheet has been included for this lesson but also the previous lessons about the erection of the Berlin Wall for any students who may need this catch up.
PLENARY/EXTENSION: From all of Gorbachev’s actions, students score or shade on a graph, which had the biggest impact on bringing about the end of the Cold War and the collapse of Communism.

This lesson covers the actions and policies of Mikhail Gorbachev from 1985-1991. The lesson includes all the information needed in a helpful fact sheet to compliment your other resources.
RECAP: Missing terms quiz about the actions of President Reagan from lesson 16.
STARTER: A discussion question about the forms of technology available in the West by the 1980s and how this might show the difference between capitalism and communism.
STARTER: A cartoon for the students to discuss showing Mikhail Gorbachev and the ‘breaking up’ of the Soviet Union. Students have to interpret the cartoon as a way into the lesson.
STARTER: 3 sources. Students should read each one and ‘infer’ what they can about the actions of Gorbachev.
BACKGROUND: Various, clear slides to outline the events and actions taken by Gorbachev in this time before the students read further.
TASK: Students are asked to complete a fact file about Gorbachev. Students are given an outline of suggested headings for this fact file from basic facts to a description of each of his actions. They will then be prompted to examine his importance and such turning points in the Cold War.

This lesson examines the role of civil rights organisations such as CORE, NCAAP, RCNL, the Church and to a lesser extent the role of universities. It looks at their main aims, their methods as well as the attitude that white Americans had towards them.
