Word Classes in The Jabberwocky
Learning Aim: To identify word classes in a nonsense poem.
This is a lesson for Key Stage 3 classes which asks students to read The Jabberwocky and then explain the meaning of a range of nonsense words in the poem. Students will then identify the type of words used in the poem. E.g. the word ‘slithy’ being used as an adjective.
Journey to the River Sea - Comprehension
15 comprehension questions on the opening of *Journey to the River Sea. An ideal activity for Key Stage 3 classes who are studying the novel or as a stand-alone comprehension task.

Caged Bird by Maya Angelou
A lesson on Maya Angelou’s poem Caged Bird.
The Learning Aim is ‘To analyse the impact of language in a poem.’
It starts by exploring the connotations of the words ‘caged’ and ‘bird’ before moving on to look at the poem itself.
The focus is on the presentation of the birds through the use of verbs, but challenge tasks are included which ask students to look at the poem as an extended metaphor of racism in the United States.
Students are then asked to write four paragraphs on freedom in the poem.
A Monster Calls - Analytical Essay
Two lessons for Key stage 3 students on planning and writing an essay on Conor in A Monster Calls, following an analysis of an extract from the chapter Understanding.
Students will answer the question* how does the writer use language to present Conor’s feelings?*
