This is a lesson on how to answer AQA Literature Paper 1 Section B (A Christmas Carol). It is aimed at lower-attaining students and contains the Assessment Objectives written in a more accessible way. It also includes sentence starters to help students write a paragraph. The question is ‘Starting with this extract, how does Dickens present Scrooge as an outsider to society?’ This question was taken from the AQA Specimen paper from 2014.

A lesson on Maya Angelou’s poem Caged Bird. The Learning Aim is ‘To analyse the impact of language in a poem.’ It starts by exploring the connotations of the words ‘caged’ and ‘bird’ before moving on to look at the poem itself. The focus is on the presentation of the birds through the use of verbs, but challenge tasks are included which ask students to look at the poem as an extended metaphor of racism in the United States. Students are then asked to write four paragraphs on freedom in the poem.

A poetry lesson analysing language and themes in ‘Same Love’ by Macklemore. This is a useful way of engaging students in poetry but also to look at poetry/songs as a form of protest.

Learning Aim: To identify word classes in a nonsense poem. This is a lesson for Key Stage 3 classes which asks students to read The Jabberwocky and then explain the meaning of a range of nonsense words in the poem. Students will then identify the type of words used in the poem. E.g. the word ‘slithy’ being used as an adjective.
