Uplevelling Sentences!
This engaging and highly-purposeful lesson has been designed to enable children to uplevel their basic sentences, creating more precise, elaborate passages.
The lesson takes the children through the process of contemplating vocabulary choices within each of the main word classes, before considering sentence variety in terms of length, form and order.
Children learn through:
-Defining what uplevelling is, and understanding how some sentences can be too vague and basic;
-Considering how a model example can be improved through the use of more precise nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs;
-Investigating how conjunctions and fronted adverbials can be utilised in order to change sentence types, lengths and orders for clarity and effect;
-Employing the strategies that they have learnt to create and uplevel their own series of sentences based on a visual stimulus;
-Evaluating their partner’s writing attempts, endeavouring to find further appropriate opportunities for uplevelling.
The resource pack is comprised of a colourful and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation, which offers a step-by-step guide through the entirety of the lesson. There is nothing to print, simply download and go!
The lesson was originally created for children in upper KS2, however with minor adaptations could easily be suitable for those in lower KS2 or lower KS3.
Skellig - Michael and Mina!
This engaging and informative lesson helps students to make detailed interpretations about two of the main characters in David Almond’s Skellig: Michael and Mina. In particular, students comprehend the character traits of the two characters, before analysing the development of their relationship over the course of the story.
The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through:
- Defining and exemplifying the key character traits of both Michael and Mina;
- Reading and tracking Michael and Mina's relationship development throughout the story;
- Analysing how and why Michael and Mina's relationship becomes so strong by the end of the story;
- Peer assessing each other's learning attempts;

This fun and informative lesson helps students to understand the descriptive language techniques used by David Walliams in his descriptions of Bumfresh Towers in ‘Billionaire Boy.’ In particular, students analyse how Walliams language is used to create imagery, before designing and describing their own imaginative mansions!
The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through:
-Completing a card-sorting activity to define and exemplify each of the descriptive devices;
- Reading and understanding extracts from a section of Billionaire Boy, in which the mansion is described;
- Identifying and analysing Walliams's use of language devices throughout the extracts;
- Writing their own language device-filled descriptions of their mansions, with support from a detailed planning template;
- Self assessing their own learning attempts.

This fun and informative lesson helps students to understand two of the key themes throughout David Walliams ‘Billionaire Boy:’ money and happiness. Students explore Joe’s happiness, before then producing their own writing to argue piece on the topic of whether they believe money can buy happiness.

The Charge of the Light Brigade - Alfred, Lord Tennyson - Double Lesson!
This full double lesson (the resources are enough for at least 2-3 hours of teaching time) provides an engaging and highly-informative study of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s conflict poem ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade.’
Students learn to interpret and analyse the poem in terms of content, language, and structure, learn more about the context of the Crimean War and the Battle of Balaclava, and gain crucial skills in structuring analytical responses to texts.

Kamikaze - Beatrice Garland - Double Lesson!
These engaging, comprehensive lesson resources aim to improve students’ understanding of Beatrice Garland’s conflict poem ‘Kamikaze’ with a particular focus upon the language, structure, and subject matter used within the poem. By the end of the lesson, students demonstrate their knowledge of the text analytically, through assured, appropriate, and sustained interpretations.
The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through:
Knowledge harvesting what they know about Japan, World War II and kamikaze pilots, developing their contextual understanding to aid their reading of the poem;
Reading and interpreting the poem, using a provided line-by-line analysis, and interactive group activities;
Developing their understanding through inferring and analysing key language and structural choices;
Analysing how the predominant themes are conveyed through Garland’s language and structure choices;
Self/ Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts.

The Time Machine - H.G. Wells (adapted) - Whole Class Reading Session!
This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s comprehension skills through a reading of the opening extract of ‘The Time Machine’ (originally written by H.G. Wells, adapted age-appropriately by Eric Brown).
The resource pack includes the extract and all of the activities for the session, which the class are guided through via a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation. The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language.
The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities.
The session is best suited for children in years 5-8, although with minor adaptations it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups. The session is suitable for home/ remote learning. The resources are suitable for home/ remote learning.
