FREE Games from the Past Primary Source Activity

Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s painting of “Children’s Games” is one of the best primary sources I’ve come across that give us a little glimpse into the games children played in the past. The painting “Children’s Games” depicted life in the Netherlands in the 1560s. There are over 250 children playing 83 different games. With this activity, in pairs or small groups, children look at a corner of the painting and find the games on a list. They then identify if the game is still played nowadays, and they make guesses about how to play an unfamiliar game in the painting. It’s a fabulous way to bring history alive, with such a relatable topic, and it gets children using a primary source to gather and analyse information from the past. Great Fire of London Craft Activity Class Display KS1

This craft and wall mural is going to look fantastic in your classroom, and children are going to love making it! With such a stunning visual display, this event in history is sure to stick in their memories! There are six different house designs for children to choose from, with one, two, or three storeys. Each house comes in 2-4 parts for children to colour and glue together. Then they use tissue, crepe, or coloured paper to add flames. Each child makes one house to contribute to the wall mural. When the houses are all finished, they make a display that’s 4 metres long! There are also signs, and shop labels, as well as a display heading. I’ve also included a smaller, individual version for children to make their own “Pudding Lane” instead of a class mural, with six houses to colour, cut, and glue onto paper in any order. Visual instructions are included, although it’s very easy to make. I hope your children enjoy recreating the Great Fire of London on Pudding Lane! You will receive 4 PDF files. -----------LEAVE A REVIEW AND GET A FREEBIE---------  If you like using this resource after your purchase, I’d love it if you could leave a quick review. FREE Area and Perimeter Memory Aid Colouring Page

Children often find it hard to remember the difference between area and perimeter, which affects their ability to do calculations correctly. So, the more memory aids we can use to help them, the more likely it is that they will remember the difference. With this activity, children color in the word “AREA” which covers the area of the rectangle, and they write the word “PERIMETER” around the perimeter of the rectangle. I’ve included a full page and half page option. You may also like an engaging, real-world activity like this one to practise area and perimeter. This resource is a free download for single-classroom use only. It can not be copied, shared, rewritten, amended, sold or distributed to others.
