Cartoon Linear Graphs - KS3/KS4

(1)
Cartoon Linear Graphs: Get from one character to their sidekick and tell name the line upon which they've just travelled in the graph. An attempt to make linear graphs a bit more interesting.

Erica's Errors On Sequences and Series

(6)
Erica is getting a bit lost on arithmetic and geometric sequences and series. Could you please help her sort out her homework? Her errors will need explaining so that they aren't made again. A task designed to encourage discussion.

Fenton's Simultaneous Equations

(2)
Fenton the dog likes chasing deer and geese through Richmond Park (the original video from YouTube is included in the Notebook file). The Rangers need to calculate the number of distressed animals there are as a result of the chases using the total number of feet chased and the total number of animals.

Functions Spiders

(7)
Practice on the function notation (new to GCSE!) involving substituting into a function and finding the value of x given what f(x) equals. This also involves composite functions. This should hopefully encourage your class to talk about their answers and understanding of the topic. Now includes an extra "find the inverse" slide!

Introduction to Complex and Imaginary Numbers

(3)
We had to come up with a “taster” lesson for Year 11s thinking about doing Maths or Further Maths A Level. We decided on this as it is something they will have heard of, isn’t on the Further or Additional Maths GCSE and relatively straightforward in its initial stages. There is a PowerPoint and a codebreaker.
Exploding Shapes

Exploding Shapes

(7)
This is designed as a starter, plenary or a discussion exercise. There are four "explosions" to work through and I have given you the choice of the students working out the shapes from the properties or finding the properties given the shape. This moves from triangles and quadrilaterals to polygons to 3D shapes. Some shapes have the same property so link to the same cloud. This has been designed to check understanding and to give some the opportunity to expand on properties. I have not included all properties of all shapes to naturally generate discussion and differentiation.

Enlargement - An Introduction

(4)
This is split into four parts: finding scale factor, enlargement with no centre, enlargement with a centre, enlargement on a co-ordinate grid. It is supposed to scaffold up from basic to relatively difficult, but not too difficult! Typos corrected...

Party Planner - Substitution

(3)
Help test the formulae the party planner uses to calculate the amounts of each item they need. Very straight forward and intended for a low ability set.

Monsters Inc - Properties of Number

(4)
This is aimed at lower ability but could also be used for higher ability. It combines maths and drawing as you have to sketch what the monster should look like given the properties. The first two have specific numbers, the second two offer a variety of answers and was intended (by me) to lead to discussion, but you could use it however you like!
The Algebra Games

The Algebra Games

(2)
A student gave me the title (pun on 'The Hunger Games' - original was 'The Number Games'), I did the rest. Five different sets of questions in a functional style for students to work through either individually or in pairs/teams.

If you've done these before it follows the same pattern. If not, you show the screen for 30 seconds, they look in silence (without writing anything). They then get everything down on paper. Show the screen a few more times. Judge at the end. Instructions are on there.

Ratio Spider

This covers sharing in a given ratio, simplifying and recipes. Each spider has challenges for discussion when seeking solutions. Designed to encourage discussion.
