Reading Resource - Senses Star - KS1/KS2 This reading resource is fully editable and in the word document format. This activity encourages children to use their senses (eyes-sight, nose-smell, ears- sound, hands-touch, mouth- taste and heart to represent personality) map out a character’s emotions and actions - whether this is a character from a book, film or their own creation on an outline of a body. This reading resource comes in a horizontal and vertical form. It also comes with a key words document to help with sense specific words. The activity can be extended by asking the pupils to write down their own descriptive words (adjectives) related to the character of study. Children can use a dictionary to explore more vocabulary. With the National Curriculum in mind, I have created a set of lessons based on poetry with tasks attached. As reinforced in the National Curriculum, children should experience of high-quality discussions on a wide range of poems. Be able to learn and appreciate rhymes and poems, and to recite some by heart. To be able to recognise different forms of poetry like free verse, narrative and haiku poetry. Children should be given the opportunities to prepare and perform poems understanding through intonation, tone and volume so that the meaning is clear to an audience. As reinforced by the National Curriculum, children should experience high-quality discussions on a wide range of poems and learn the poetry tools to create their own. The season focus for this lesson is winter. Many detailed pictures are attached of snow, snowball, snowman, snow angel, snow fights, snow covered park/mountains, fireplace, hot drinks (hot chocolate), snow in the city and snow in London. Also discussed in detail are the non-religious winter holidays and religious holidays that often occur in the winter months (Hanukkah, Christmas, and Diwali). Children will learn about these religious holidays and a special item often associated with each holiday (Christmas tree, Mince pies, Menorah, Latkes, Sufganiyot, Diya/Diva lamps and the many different foods eaten on Diwali). There 3 poems each associated with a particular religious festival. Also included in this powerpoint is a non-religious poem about the winter holidays. These slides can be edited to include or exclude certain elements to suit different classes. This lesson can be a stand alone lesson however I would recommend teaching the previous lessons (in my shop) to help children understand how to write a poem as the quality of their poetry will depend on the children’s ability.
