This resource is designed to enable students to use their knowledge of holiday vocabulary and related grammatical structures to piece together five correct sentences in each section. The completed sentences will give them some models, often using tenses other than the present, to use in their own independent writing. The sentences are quite complex, and this may be an activity to complete in pairs. Students work from left to right, picking one word/phrase from each column each time to complete the sentence. he game shows a family tree of La Familia Moderna, better known as ABC’s show “Modern Family” (This show is great! And it includes the famous Colombian actress Sofia Vergara). Students have picture cards with which they can play games relating to family vocabulary and the show. A list of several game idea is included. Since this game is free of charge and used for educational purposes, it does not infringe on copyright laws. Therefore, please do not sell it! Hope you enjoy! I know of many high school students who love this show, so using it for the Family unit would be culturally-relevant for many students. (P.S. - Sorry the pictures for the cards are a bit blurry!)

I grew up calling these “cootie catchers” or “fortune-tellers,” but these little origami games are fun for Spanish vocab practice! Includes: 2 different “comecocos” versions student instructions explaining how to play student answer keys for checking their partner’s work instructions for YOU on how to fold these things! Vocabulary is pretty universal–but it’s specifically geared for Avancemos 1 Unit 3.1. I’ve included editable versions of documents included so that you can make modifications. I’d encourage you to give it a try! It’s a hit with students, and not nearly so hard as it looks to put together.

Simple and fun. You just need a die and everything is ready. Move forward according to the number you get and conjugate the verb in brackets of each box, if you do not respond correctly, you lose a turn. The first person that reaches the end wins. Excellent for checking conjugations in the present tense. Regular and Irregular verbs. Enjoy :)

This worksheet allows students to practice the use of the Spanish verbs SER and ESTAR, by reading a paragraph based on the TV show “Modern Family” and filling in the blank with the appropriate verb. Student will be engaged while being familiar with the TV show. Encanto Movie: Familia Madrigal Family Tree pictures and practice with key. Two different versions (one with bonus points). You should cover the family vocabulary before using this product.

This activity can be used with the “Encanto” movie OR the music video for the song “Welcome to the Family Madrigal” in Spanish or English. Links to the music videos are included. The “Encanto” movie is available on Disney+. In this 2-part activity, Students will drag the family members to complete the Madrigal family tree according to the song. Then they will match family members to their magical power. Note- some YouTube videos do not include Mirabel’s magic power, but the movie song continues to include it. These activities can done with the full movie (found on Disney+ or for purchase on YouTube), or with links provided to the song.

This PowerPoint helps students learn a little bit about the cultural representation of Colombian clothing in “Encanto” while practising their vocabulary. At first, they have some slides describing some of the traditional clothes of Colombia represented in the movie. Next, they work on labeling and describing what the characters are wearing as well as, describe their personalities as we revisit adjectives and descriptions. This is a great activity after showing Encanto OR just to add some culture to your clothing unit. Enjoy :)

Start with the matchcards to introduce the vocabulary needed to describe schools. The worksheet supports students in writing their own short descriptions of their current school and their primary school. Teaching notes are here below: Copy the vocabulary on page one onto card and cut up the word cards so that each small group of students will have one set. It helps to use a different colour card for each copy made so that the word cards can’t get mixed up between groups. Starter and plenary activities Put the vocabulary cards out on the desks for students to start matching as soon as they arrive. As each group finishes you can quickly check their cards and then move them on to any of the following extension activities:  Turn all the English cards face down – how many of the meanings can you remember? Turn them over to check.  Turn all the Spanish cards face down – how many can you remember by just looking at the English?  Pelmanism memory game – mix up all the cards, turn them face down and take turns to choose two cards. If the cards match, keep them as a pair and have another turn. If not, it’s your partner’s turn to try and find a pair. At the end of the lesson, students could revisit the activities above, perhaps racing against the clock this time to see who can match the cards the fastest. Students can also quiz each other on the English/Spanish phrases to see who can recall the most words. Worksheet Hand out copies of the worksheet on page two for students to complete the grid with the English meanings (you can allow them to use the paired vocabulary cards on their desks for reference if support is needed). Page one can be projected for them to check their answers. Students can then complete the writing tasks A-D. Answer for A En mi Instituto hay muchos edificios pero el Instituto es anticuado.
