Sensory Story for Special Needs/PMLD/SLD/ASD and Early Years.
The Journey by Neil Griffiths is a lovely rhyming story great for your weather, journeys or transport topic!
'On a windy autumn day,
A boat broke free and sailed away
has it gone for evermore, and
what adventures are in store?’
This rhyming story takes you on a magical journey with the little red boat that the boy once lost. As the boat slipped from his grasp, the boy watched sadly as it disappeared from view. Follow the boat on its exciting voyage into the unknown and marvel at what lies at its journey’s end.
This sensory story is laid out in a simple format of:
Do, Say, Play and additional info
In each category it tells the teacher what staff are doing, what the teacher is saying, and what music is playing.
Each ‘scene’ is threaded together using the text/rhyme from the story. The story has an obvious build-up of tension where pupils have opportunities to express their excitement and anticipation.
THIS SESSION REQUIRES A LARGE PARACHUTE
I am a Drama teacher with over 20 years’ experience teaching SEN including PMLD SLD MLD and ASD. Unlike many sensory stories I focus upon creating tension and atmosphere through light, shadows, music, sound effects and staff call and response.
I am new to posting resources on TES but please keep an eye out for more dramatic interactive stories.
Sensory Story ‘A Journey Through Autumn.’ Incorporates song, rhyme and call and response. Excite learners with this musical and interactive sensory journey. This is a dramatic interactive story. The emphasis is to create atmosphere and tension through the music and staff participation.
I have given clear guidelines on how to structure the session, including music recommendations and necessary stimuli and props required. The story is threaded together using simple rhyme, culminating in a tension building poem where pupils will show excitement and anticipation.

Shoebox Dirorama
For primary, Early Secondary or Special Education Needs
You are purchasing a 12 slide Powerpoint which takes pupils through the process of designing a miniature set of a scene within their favourite book or film. Students gain an understanding of the process film makers and theatre designers use to explore set design within pre-production. Pupils find this project highly engaging as it places their interests at the core of the learning. Pupils will consider films and books that are of interest to them and carefully plan their ideas, considering specific scenes and resources needed. By the end of the scheme each pupil will have created a shoe box diorama and are encouraged to showcase their designs for a peer review.
