EDEXCEL 9-1GCSE - Topic 2: Renaissance SUMMARY 'TOPIC ON A PAGE’ consolidation, revision, resource This resource provides students with a 'TOPIC ON A PAGE’ summary for MEDIEVAL MEDICINE MEDICINE Paper 1 Medicine Through Time and the Environmental Study on the Trenches Unit. It fully covers the syllabus content for each topic and can be used by students and teachers to: a) consolidate knowledge and understanding to encourage student mastery (embedding academic language and concepts)after students have completed a topic in class or as a homework task, helping them identify areas of strengths and weaknesses b) as a quick starter activity to review prior learning or weeks/months later as a spaced retrieval practice task. I regularly take sections from the placemats and use them to support spiralled learning. c) to encourage relevant exam responses - specifically targeting the themes of explaining the cause of illness, methods of prevention, treatments, care of the sick, public health, important individuals and factors effecting change. d) the question squares can be completed and then cut up into cards to form KAGAN Quiz/Quiz Trade Question and Answer Cards e) as a useful revision aid before the final exam. (Many of my Year 11 students rely on these sheets in the final weeks and days of revision and have commented that they have helped make factual recall of the huge volume of the syllabus content more achievable. The resource includes prompt pictures to appeal to visual learners and can be used as a standalone resource or in conjunction with the Edexcel Pearson Revision Guide, where all of the answers can be found. This resource can also be used in conjunction with the topic placemats that I have produced to support students in lessons. The first box contains the same summary picture for the whole topic. In particular, I have successfully used the TOPIC ON A PAGE summaries with the ‘EXAM TECHNIQUE’ side of the placemats so when students are given exam questions, they can quickly find relevant supporting knowledge to use in a response. I have used this resource successfully with students targeted Levels 4 - 9. It could be easily adapted for students working on or below L3. The ‘fill in the gaps’ prompts can be removed for higher ability students. GCSE History 9-1 Edexcel Medicine Overview Lesson

This resource can be used to introduce the Medicine Through Time GCSE course. It takes four images through time and encourages students to gain a chronological understanding of the key periods through deconstructing the carefully chosen 4 images. This worked extremely well with my students who were able to use the images to identify continuity and change between periods and make judgements on key questions such as: 1. How was illness explained? 2. How did people try to treat illness? 3. How were the sick cared for? 4. Who cared for the sick? Students need an A3 copy of the word document table and an A4 copy of the picture sheet - ideally in colour. This work can be completed individually or in pairs. I adapted this resource for current year 11 students as a group based revision task - (really well received by both students and other colleagues). I will publish this also.

The Wave (1981) - Worksheet to support the TV Programme

Written to support the teaching of the Edexcel 9-1 History GCSE the worksheet supports the 1981 US TV version of The Wave. The film is used to explore the reasons for why a totalitarian system was allowed to develop in Germany from 1933 and how individuals, and particularly the young were coordinated. It makes for an alternative way of teaching both the establishment of totalitarianism in Nazi Germany as well as the limits of its appeal and opposition. The worksheet is written in Publisher formatted to print in A3. This however, can be amended and saved as a PDF (included) for A4 printing: 'Based on a real incident at an American high school in 1967, this short TV movie shows the horror of mob psychology and group pressure. The high school teacher gives his students a lesson in the history of Nazi Germany, not by having them read a chapter in a book but by turning them into Nazis ……. without their even being aware that it is happening.'

Henry VIII - Inside the Mind of a Tyrant - Ep1. Prince - Supporting Worksheet Written to support the David Starkey documentary as enrichment for able GCSE 9-1 students or A level teaching support. Comprehension and extension questions are provided to follow the programme and support information collection. The resource provides a summary of the documentary and its contents. Written in Publisher to A3 formatting, but can be amended and saved as a PDF for A4 printing David Starkey follows the dramatic events of Henry's childhood, events that shaped his personality and his attitude to kingship. In 1485, on the field at Bosworth, Henry's father, Henry Tudor, seized the crown from the defeated Yorkist king Richard III. To us, this event marks the end of the Wars of the Roses but to contemporaries it was not clear that this bitter dynastic struggle was truly over. Henry, Tudor's second son, was created Duke of York to link the royal house to the defeated faction. But Henry had a rival in the shape of Perkin Warbeck, who claimed to be the real Duke of York and rightful king. Henry Tudor would have to defend his throne twice in battle, and his son's life depended on the outcome. The death of his brother Arthur made Henry Prince of Wales, and his father's heir and rival.

Comprehension and extension questions are provided to follow the programme and support information collection. The resource provides a summary of the documentary and its contents. Written in Publisher to A3 formatting, but can be amended and saved as a PDF for A4 printing This episode traces Henry's ten-year affair with Anne Boleyn. Henry began to pursue Anne in early 1526. As lust turned to love, he conceived the idea of marrying her. But that required a Papal annulment of his marriage to Catherine. David Starkey's research in the Vatican archives has revealed the real story of Henry's futile six-year struggle to get what he wanted from Rome. During this time, and prompted by Anne, Henry began to re-think the nature of the English monarchy. He came to believe that the King, not the Pope, should rule the Church in England. The result was the break with Rome, a new wife for Henry, and a new religion for his subjects. But the marriage did not last. Henry's court had always been a dangerous place, and when Queen Anne turned against Thomas Cromwell, Henry's chief minister, Cromwell knew that he had to move against her to save himself. He manipulated Henry's naturally suspicious nature to engineer Anne's execution. Money and power had triumphed over love.

Comprehension and extension questions are provided to follow the programme and support information collection. The resource provides a summary of the documentary and its contents. Written in Publisher to A3 formatting, but can be amended and saved as a PDF for A4 printing Henry's father had won and defended the crown in battle. For Henry, this was the mark of true regal legitimacy and he was determined to emulate his father and win even greater glory. However, to wage war Henry had to free himself from the councillors he had inherited from his father and be his own man. Starkey traces Henry's quest to become a major player in Europe, his successes at the Battle of the Spurs and the Field of the Cloth of Gold and his eventual humiliation after the Battle of Pavia. Throughout these years, his relationship with the brilliant, Machiavellian Thomas Wolsey was central to his reign. But even Wolsey could not disguise the relative impotence of England and her monarchy compared to the great European powers. These foreign disappointments were mirrored by the gradual deterioration in Henry's marriage. If Henry had died, like so many, of the sweating sickness in 1525, he would have barely registered in history, his reign a feeble coda to the story of England's medieval monarchy. But events were about to take an extraordinary turn. Henry would remake himself, his throne and his kingdom - and all for love.

Written as an enrichment/extension/flipped activity for the new 9-1 GCSE curriculum the content would also be appropriate at A Level. Historian Lucy Worsley time travels back to the Tudor Court to witness some of the most dramatic moments in the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives. Combining drama based on eye witness accounts and historical sources with Lucy’s own contemporary comment, Lucy eavesdrops on the events and reports back to the audience. This episode follows the emotional and physical struggles of Katherine of Aragon as she strove to give Henry the male heir he so desired. As Henry’s eye wandered over the women at court, Anne Boleyn, not wishing to be cast aside as her sister Mary had been, repeatedly rejected the king’s advances and insisted on marriage. The worksheet is written in Publisher and formatted to A3. It however, can be amended and saved as a PDF file for A4 printing if required.
