Making Maths Memorable

Average Rating4.29
(based on 53 reviews)

Ever since my PGCE I have been convinced that every Maths topic has a unique and interesting way to be taught. 7 years later and I have collected and created 100s of resources to prove my point. All resources, including IB and A Level, are designed to be thoroughly engaging but yet cover every bit of content required with plenty of practise too. Teach LCM with the life of the Cicada bugs or teach proportions using celebrity faces and the golden ratio. All fully animated engaging powerpoints.

Check out my free “Christmas maths escape room” to have a better idea of how this works. This activity runs on OneNote so students will need access to a computer. As it is done using online OneNote they do not need an account for it - just click the link and go! The powerpoint is for teachers reference to help guide students when they get stuck - the answers to each room can be found in the NOTES part of the Powerpoint. The only way I know to share this with students is using a share link which shares my original uneditable OneNote file. This does mean you will not be able to edit anything. If you spot a mistake, tell me and I will fix my original file and this will in turn fix it for anyone using the share link! If for some reason the share link stops working - just let me know and I will send you another share link. I have put the share link at the start of the powerpoint. HOW IT WORKS: Send the share link to students. DO NOT send the powerpoint to students. Each page represents a room which gives a code to access the password protected next page. Their aim is to access the final page. It works better in pairs. The Powerpoint is just for you. You only need to share the link with them. The final room tells you the 4 digit code to “the safe”. I have an actual small safe i bought online which i can easily change the code to and just put a bag of sweets in it. You could just tell them to “escape” to win or tell you the code to the safe to win. Content: This covers Algebra topics aimed at years 7 and 8 which are - One step equations Substitution (positive only) Coordinates Function machines Collecting like terms two step equations (positive only) Expanding single brackets

I have written a number of mini tests to fit perfectly on to one sheet of A4 (I actually print them 2 to a page so A5!). These tests can be completed and peer marked in the same lesson and will be reused by you many many times over the years. Really easy to mark due to the layout of the test paper and the markschemes included. This test is particularly difficult looking at 3D trig and bearings. For SOHCAHTOA and Pythagoras please download the other test that focuses on the basics.

Ideal for finishing the Mensuration chapter. I use it for a pretest before the official chapter test.

Christmas Mobius Strips

Students find it fascinating to what happens when cutting a mobius strip in half. Then how different it is when you cut it at a 3rd. The powerpoint guides students to discover the outcomes themselves. Armed with a few extra strips of colourful paper and a stapler the teacher can connect everything the students made to make a very mathematical christmas decoration.

This resource teaches through PowerPoint and worksheets. The worksheets and PowerPoint run alongside each other so you can demonstrate at the front and show the answers to the worksheets at the front. Includes a worksheet and PowerPoint to explain how negative enlargements work. 4 worksheets in total allowing for brilliant differentiation or split it over two lessons.

Whole school Code breaking activity

There are 4 codes from throughout history in which students need to break. Each code gets progressively harder leading to the final code of a simplified Enigma machine. It is impossible to solve a code if the previous one has not been cracked as each one provides vital clues for the next code. The final code (the simplifed enigma) once broken is a 3 digit number. This resource can be used in many different way. One way is buying a 3 digit combination lock and locking a box/locker full of prizes. Then send all students the presentation. Or send all students one code a week if you want to stretch it out more. The first slide needs to be edited to suit your plans.

Students take it in turns answering questions to reveal the picture behind. First to guess the catchphrase wins. A variety of topics already created but very easy to add your own.

Fun one-off lesson. Perfect for end of term fun lessons. Everyone knows how to play Naughts and Crosses (Tic-Tac-Toe) but this is a brilliant advanced way of playing. The presentation teaches rules fully and students will continue playing in their free time. Print the last slide on the PowerPoint to use as a worksheet for students.

PowerPoints written so that a teacher can learn from the PowerPoints and teach from them. Students can use the PowerPoints to learn independently too. Many colleagues have used my lessons on Decision 1 without a strong understanding of Decision themselves. Includes an easy to mark chapter test with answers.

Students throw a soft toy at the board (I use a toy angry bird). Teacher clicks the number that the student hit to reveal a question. If it is a yellow question students get a merit. Works best with smart boards as questions will reveal themselves when hit by the soft toy.
