Physics Equation Skill - Out with FIFA, in with HENCH/HEINRCH

Throughout my teaching career, I’ve grappled with the challenge of helping students tackle physics equations comprehensively, ensuring they show all their working out. Despite trying various methods like FIFA, I found students often struggled to remember each component or missed crucial steps in their calculations. In response, I developed a new approach that has yielded remarkable success in my classroom. Named “HENCH” for lower-ability students and “HEINRCH” for higher-ability ones, this method breaks down each step required for marks in physics calculation questions, ensuring students don’t overlook important elements. Given the increasing emphasis on thoroughness in exams by boards like AQA, it’s crucial for students to demonstrate their working out at every stage. This method not only helps students achieve full credit but also ensures they develop a deeper understanding of the subject. It’s a simple yet effective tool that equips students with the skills they need to excel. It would be wonderful to see this method used consistently across many educational platforms to support our students understand how to approach difficult physics equations questions! The resource contains worked examples of how to use HENCH/HEINRCH and photos of actually exam questions using this method. Like and rate this resource to help it reach as many physics educators as possible! Thank you.
