Divide fractions year 6 lesson 4

This is is the fourth lesson I did with my year 6 class on dividing fractions. It’s a PowerPoint lesson (which contains animated slides) plenty of visual explanations of dividing a fraction by a whole number (by finding the equivalent fraction) and also the quicker method. Prior learning recommended: equivalent fractions and putting fractions into their simplest form. There are lots of differentiated practice questions with the answers of the next slide. For independent work, there is a differentiated slide which can be printed as a worksheet or the pupils can work from the board (if you want to save paper!). While they are completing their independent work, you can display the slide with the challenge on it which they can complete when they’ve finished. I have included the answers at the end to save teacher time -why not get your class to mark their own work!

This lesson offers your class practice for the different kinds of addition and subtraction that come up in the arithmatic SATs paper. e.g. = 897 - 567 (equal on the left side) 567.8 + 34.98 = 10-8.66 = You can discuss and model the different methods that your class can use to answer these questions (e.g. the number line) The worksheets are differentiated three ways: LA=*, MA=** and HA= ***. The answers are at the end of the word document to save time.

Place value: adding and subtracting 10,100 and 1000 year 6

This lesson begins with opportunities to discuss as a class how you would add/subtract 10, 100 and 1000 from a number without using the formal written method. It then has differentiated practice questions and the answers for your class to complete on their whiteboards. One penultimate slide can be printed off as a worksheet and has 3 levels (Blue for LA, Orange for MA and red for HA). The last slide is the answers to these questions for you to use or for you to get your class to self mark and save you some time! While the class are working independently, I always display the third last slide that has the Learning Objective on it and two challenge questions for children to complete if they finish early and need an extra push.

Addition and Subtraction word problems

This is a resource that I prepared for my year 6 class in Maths on word problems. The word problems all involve addition and subtraction, some in the context of money. The LO is to choose the appropriate method because some questions can be answered using the formal written method and some might need another method like using a number line to work out how much change is due. This is superb SATs revision! Along with a powerpoint, I have also included worksheets that are differentiated for Lower, middle and higher. (*, ** and *** next to Learning Objective to show you which is which). The answers for each level are at the end of the work document. Before this lesson I would recommend do a revision lesson on addition and subtraction of decimals. Concentrate most of your teaching on how to use a number line but get the class to look at each practice question with a critical eye. I didn’t get through all the practice questions on the slides but there are more than needed just in case you need!

If your class is like mine, I have included a worksheet (differentiated three ways on Word document) that has the angles already drawn out.
