Paws, Claws, and Whiskers: Save the Bees! (Explanation Writing)
In this resource, children will look at text features of explanation texts before writing their own about Colony Collapse Disorder.

Hidden Worlds: Writing with Portal Keys (Narrative Writing)
Children will write a narrative that begins in the action in a hidden world, and then changes to the past to explain the events leading up to their use of a portal key. Special attention is paid to the planning of small moments, including the use of the portal key. Grammar is focused on the effective use of shifts in formality.

Hidden Worlds: Portal Keys with Circuit Stickers STEM
After writing a narrative about using a portal key to travel to a hidden world, children design the scene they’ve written about and then design a circuit with conductive tape and LEDs to make the portal key’s location interactive with the audience.

Children will use persuasive devices to design a Go Fund Me page to persuade their audience to fund an expedition to a hidden world.
In the past, I have had the class fund the expeditions with printed ‘class bucks’ (provided) based on how persuasive the presentations are.

Year 5 Maths: Number and Place Value
This resource has been made using the NUMBER AND PLACE VALUE OBJECTIVES for Year 5 from the 2014 National Curriculum of England:
Read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1 000 000 and determine the value of each digit
Count forwards or backwards in steps of powers of 10 for any given number up to 1 000 000
Interpret negative numbers in context, count forwards and backwards with positive and negative whole numbers, including through zero
Round any number up to 1 000 000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10 000 and 100 000
Solve number problems and practical problems that involve number and place value
Read Roman numerals to 1000 (M) and recognise years written in Roman numerals

Valentines STEAM: Interactive Candy Gram
In this resource, children will research different Valentine’s cards before creating one that uses a circuit, making it interactive. They will also taste test, prototype, design, make, and evaluate Valentine’s candies to include in their candy gram.
