Book Tasting Activity for Introducing Novel Studies

(0)
Introduce children to different novels by copying segments of different novels and offering them on tables (like food on a table) without any information about authors, titles, or context. Give children time to read different texts before they use the templates included in this pack to decide which “tasting” is the most delicious (best fit). In my own classroom, I choose different novels with similar themes and then use this to differentiate the reading that the children will read concurrently based on their preferences during the tasting. An editable and digital copy is provided with download.

Design Your Own Video Game Character

(0)
Children will look at popular avatars from different video games, including Super Mario, Bowser, Link, and Donkey Kong. They will look at how their design has changed over time, and will compare how characters are similar and different. Children will then design their own video game characters; a hero and an enemy. In the past I have used this alongside a unit on designing a video game on Scratch, where the children can include their avatar in their game. To do this, we took photos of the drawn characters and then edited them online before uploading them to the program. A link to digital resources for editing and sharing on Google Classroom and Seesaw is available with download.

Make Working Scientifically more fun with MakeyMakey! This resource has been designed to use as a way to teach the Working Scientifically objectives apart from the core science objectives. In the past, I have used the lessons with the class as a way to reinforce the concept of a fair test, as well as different types of variables. The pack has been broken up into objectives for Years 3 and 4. Using the MakeyMakey gives the children the opportunity to go deeper into concepts, combining them with engineering, design and core science. Children can also create products with the littleBits to present their findings from enquiries and conclusions as a way to show their understanding. --------------- You might also like: Working Scientifically I can Statements for Years 3 & 4 Working Scientifically with Crayons for Years 3 & 4 - STEAM Unit Working Scientifically with Energy Bites for Years 3 & 4 Working Scientifically with Cookies for Years 3 & 4 Working Scientifically with littleBits for Years 3 and 4
