Lists of regular phonic spellings in short sequences. For ear-training. What has changed? One phoneme changes for each new word. Use with a good set of plastic letters where digraph consonants and vowels are presented as single units.

Resource intended to draw attention to the fact that sentences are not always statements. Mind-map as a reminder. The level can be kept simple by reducing the number of cards in use. The activity worksheets can be used for a written reply if children can cope but most of the work can be done orally 1-1 or with a small group. The connectives for sentences with two halves often present quite a problem for kids with delayed language skills and need a lot of practice. Could also be used for EAL.

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Using the program Communicate:In Print you can help children with little speech but lots of ideas to get something on paper. Making story-boards provides the opportunity to elicit ideas, organise narrative, invite choosing, and make the child's idea come alive. The adult can add text later and put symbol support on critical key words. Then an adult can read the text and the child can 'read' the symbolised words to tell the story. He will be practising some important pre-reading skills.

Illustrated with Widgit and PCS symbols. Children need to associate pictures and explain why they go together. Also to read/guess what the book says from the pictures. All three items useful for discussion and could be used for EAL too.

Print the MAKE QUESTIONS AND STATEMENTS on card. The little cards will be more manageable if you use full size A4, but they are legible if you print 2-up. Basically it is an activity requiring rearrangement of word cards to make questions or statements but there are other ideas in the guide too.
