A full, differentiated lesson based on the new AQA SOW (C5.7). A starter where students categorise items as acidic, alkaline or neutral is used to determine preconceived knowledge. Following this the pH range, acids, bases, and alkalis are discussed making use of examples. Students are prompted to take notes at key points using red font and a pen symbol. The release of H+ and OH- ions is also discussed ahead of methods in determining the pH of solutions. Knowledge is then applied to a differentiated question grid followed by peer/self-marking. A practical exercise (tailored to (C5.7) is then conducted where students prepare a pH curve by systematically adding acid to an alkaline solution using a burette, and monitoring the pH using a probe. Note, pipettes and universal indicator can be used as simple alternatives respectively. Stretch questions are included for the more able. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are incorporated into the slides facilitating self/peer marking and timers are included to promote pace.
A full differentiated lesson with everything you need to teach the topic of the nervous system. Lesson includes timers and animations to promote pace and self/peer mediated correction of answers. Support sheets included for less able and stretch activities for more able. Based on the AQA (B10.2) SOW but can also be used for others.
A full differentiated lesson on the topic of states of matter. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 (C1.2) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson includes a card sort, written activities and a practical exercise where students study the change of state in stearic acid. Animations and timers are included to promote peer/self correction of answers and to promote pace respectively.
This lesson is based on the new AQA SOW (B3.6) but can be used for others. This lesson includes the required practical. The lesson outlines key information relating to the digestive system and enzymes, students fill in a table handout during the presentation of these slides. The table is then self/peer marked to ensure key information is present. The practical is then introduced (a brief demonstration may be beneficial here) to and conducted by the students. Those who finish in good time are prompted to draw a graph and identify the variables within the experiment. An extra stretch is based on students suggesting improvements to the techniques used during the experiment. This is followed by a discussion of results and ‘what should of been seen’. The plenary is based on students reflecting on their progress against the learning objectives, and sharing this with the class.
This lesson is tailored to the new OCR-A SOW. Please note this is a follow on lesson to a free resource which can be found here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/gene-expression-lac-operon-complete-lesson-a2-11780445
This lesson expands on the above to cover introns, exons and mRNA editing, cAMP is post transnational regulation of gene expression, body plans (Hox genes), and apoptosis and mitosis in the regulation of body plans. All answers incorporated into the slides or attached in included mark scheme, animation is included to facilitate self correction/questioning and timers are included to promote pace.
A full lesson based on the new AQA (C5.2) SOW but could be used for others. This lesson has been prepared for a low to mid range ability. Displacement reactions are introduced through the starter and a short talk, students are prompted to take note of key text highlighted in red. There is then a short scaffolded activity where students must predict whether or not a reaction will occur by referring to the reactivity series. There is then a teacher led demonstration of such reactions, during which students must complete a table handout. Following a review of observations students are taught about carbon and hydrogens position within series during a short talk. Students then apply themselves to questions based on the content of the lesson. The plenary involves students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are included through animation facilitating self/peer correction during questioning. Timers are included to promote pace. Instruction for the lab demonstration are also included.
A complete lesson on metals and oxygen based on the activate 2 SOW. The lesson includes a practical demonstration where students fill in a observation sheet and produce (simple) balanced equations. If you can get pure oxygen from the techies you can really promote a love of learning with this. A choice of 2 plenaries are included, reflective writing or whiteboard based. Answers to each learning checkpoint are incorporated into the slides via animation. Timers are included to promote pace.
A full differentiated lesson on the gas exchange system. The lesson is tailored to the Activate 1 textbook topic B2.2 but can be used for others. Includes an activity where students make use of straws, raisins and cocktail sticks to model the respiratory system. PowerPoint timers and animations are included to promote pace and self/peer mediated correction of answers.
A full lesson with all the resources you need for translocation. Covers 'sources' and 'sinks', the mass flow hypothesis and active loading. Prepared for an AS class but includes all the content needed for A2, the lesson is tailored to OCR-A but can be used for others.
A complete lesson on energy dissipation tailored towards the AQA SOW. Covers useful energy, wasted energy and friction with a learning checkpoints based on a past exam question. The ‘spreading out’ (dissipation) of energy is then covered ahead of a simple practical activity where students use pulleys to investigate friction and its effect upon work done. Follow up questions and answers included to facilitate peer or self marking after practical. Originally this lesson was planned fora high ability year 10 group, but has been used with year 9 group with no problems.
A full differentiated lesson on the topic of the skeleton. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 (B2.4) book but can be used for other SOW. The lesson includes an activity where students cut out bones and assemble skeletons in a pose of their choosing, peer assessment is based on the correct labelling of the bones and creativity of the pose. PowerPoint animations and timers are included to promote peer correction of written tasks and to promote pace respectively. An X-ray based whiteboard quiz is included as a plenary.
Includes comprehensive slides with extension work, support sheet for less able, card sort activity, product critique activity and differentiated question grid. All incorporated into the slides, no additional material needed. Used for year 8 class based on Activate text book, could be used for year 9 or a more able year 7 class.
A full lesson based on the OCR-A SOW. This lesson covers predator prey relationships and their population trends. This is followed by a past paper question for students to apply learning . The lesson then progresses to cover conservation, preservation and their importance. A literacy task is then conducted to apply/reinforce learning further. A final past paper question is used for AFL. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are included to facilitate self/peer marking. Timers are included to promote pace.
