In this activity, children will learn to use a quick number trick to multiply numbers by four and eight. Learning the four and eight-times tables is important, but sometimes mental calculations can be useful to find multiplication facts too so, this activity focuses on using the skills of doubling to help find the answers to questions where we need to multiply by four. Children will partition, double and double again to find answers. For higher-ability children, there are 8 x table questions where children will partition, double, double again, double again and put it back together.
Included is a poster which shows the method for display and answers sheets so children can self-mark.
These 6 differentiated worksheets are designed to help Year 2 and Year 3 pupils learn more about and practise adding 2 2-digit numbers together. The exercises are suitable for all abilities and will help children learn or practise the tens and ones/units method.
The method is illustrated in the first example, by breaking down the numbers into tens and ones/units in order to work out the answers.
The first 2 worksheets focus on using the method to add, where the numbers do not cross 10. The next 2 worksheets use numbers that cross 10 and the last 2 worksheets focus on adding numbers that cross 10 and also 100.
