Year 5 Block 1 Termly Wigan Maths Assessment using YouTube and PowerPoint Presentation.
I am now converting all my PowerPoint presentations into YouTube videos PowerPoint Combos. This means teachers can teach the lesson using either the PowerPoint or Youtube version of the lesson and then share the YouTube lesson with their students’ parents. This lesson can then be repeated at home as additional homework.
I love Year 5 Wigan Maths Tests. While they are little old and don’t follow the current curriculum, they are still an excellent set of tests for revision purposes. I have taken the traditional tests and converted them all into PowerPoint presentations. On top of this, I have given teachers the option of either letting the students only see the answers at the end or after each question. I really like the second option as it means I can set a question, then give them a little time to think about it or discuss it in pairs and then show them the answer and discuss the different ways different children or different pairs found their answers. This is as much a learning experience as the test itself for many children. I really hope this pack is useful for lots of teachers.
When I used the original book with an interactive whiteboard, I was always annoyed at having to skim to the end of the book to show an answer. I wanted it on the next page.
In addition, I have now replaced all the pictured with much more stimulating colourful pictures. I have also taken the time to follow the advice of Dudley council and sorted the different problems into age groups and blocks.
You will notice there is some repetition of problems both between blocks and in different year groups. The students can try the same problem twice at different times, as this is excellent consolidation. It is also an excellent time to suggest students think about how they could change the problem.
How can this be used in the classroom?
This could be used as an assessment at the start or the end of a unit. It also could be used as an emergency set of lessons for any teacher while covering another teacher’s maths classes.
In addition, it is also an excellent set of resources to prepare for different exams. Look at how the students resolve a problem and identify the different ways different students attempt to answer the same problem.
In addition to answering the problems, this is also an excellent time to look into inverse operations. How do we know we have found all the answers? How do we know we have found the correct answer?
I have really enjoyed making these mental maths problems a lot more accessible. I have enjoyed teaching them in a wide range of different classes and I hope that you too will enjoy making maths fun.
Teachers have moved on from worksheets and PowerPoints to a lot more fun with YouTube and so I am now trying to redevelop my teaching resources to match this changing world. I must admit I am much happier with a YouTube video than a PowerPoint. This lesson has cleverly combined both. You could share the Youtube lesson with parents to watch at home as extra support as well as in the classroom.

Sample materials which combine the test papers and mark scheme to help teachers prepare for the 2016 tests. The idea being a student can answer one question and then together the class checks the answers. The original test papers can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/2016-key-stage-2-mathematics-sample-test-materials-mark-schemes-and-test-administration-instructions. This is a great way of reviewing the maths tests as a whole class either as a way of revising after doing the sample tests or simple working through each question as a class.
When I am revising maths, I like to ask a question and then the students answer it on their mini whiteboards. We then check the answer on the following slide. I have combined the test papers with the marking scheme, making teaching and learning a lot more fun.
There is differentiated revision material. There are tests for levels 3 - 5, and tests for level 6, and some which are for all the students. All the students should try all the tests, to both consolidate and extend their learning to make sure they have the maximum chance of reaching their true potential.
I have presented them in the different PowerPoint formats for the older and more modern computers.
Did you know pairing a high achieving and less high achieving child together actually helps both? As the more advanced student explains how to solve a problem, they too improve their knowledge of mathematical vocabulary.

Unleash Your Potential with the “English Big Activity Book”!
Calling all Active English Learners . . . !
Welcome to the English Big Activity Book, designed specifically to engage learners from about Level 1 (Intermediate) upwards in dynamic and interactive English lessons. This extensive new collection offers a varied and interesting set of resources for practicing a wide range of English language skills, including grammar, reading, vocabulary building, and developing research skills.
The book is thoughtfully organized into subject areas, making it easy to navigate and find specific resources. Additionally, a comprehensive answer section is included, which provides notes on how to effectively use the material.
We have incorporated two special sections towards the back of the book. The first section features a collection of classroom games that have been tried and tested, ensuring they truly work in engaging learners. While some may be familiar, others are entirely original. It’s important to note that our goal in publishing descriptions of these games and activities is not to claim ownership of their invention, but to share effective ideas that receive positive responses from learners across various levels.
The second special section serves as a valuable reference, listing rhyming words and using the vowels and diphthongs from the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). These pages offer essential support for learners as they identify spelling patterns and connect words with the sounds of English.
No matter how you choose to use this book, we hope it brings you joy in learning English and helps you develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for this fabulous language—despite its occasional frustrations and challenges!
Hope you really enjoy this book!
Are your students studying Ancient Greece? Do you need photos of Greek artifacts and Greek ancient ruins? It will inspire them to think more deeply and ask more questions during discussions on the Greeks.
It comes complete with a 31 Teaching Activity Teacher Guide to help you get the most out of your teaching and this purchase.
You could look at it directly as a presentation and discuss the different materials being shown in each of photos.
You could print off and laminate the photos to make an interesting, eye-catching display about Ancient Greece.
The students could also take the laminated photos and sort them into different Grecian objects and artifacts. The students can then discuss how they think each one was used.
Certainly! Here are some examples of how the 33 different photos of bridges can be integrated into various lesson plans across different subjects:
Engineering and Technology
Lesson Topic: Types of Bridges
Activity: Present the photos of the six different types of bridges (beam, arch, suspension, cable-stayed, truss, and cantilever). Have students work in groups to research one type of bridge, its design, and its applications. Students can create a poster or presentation showcasing their findings, using the photos as visual aids.
Mathematics
Lesson Topic: Geometry in Bridges
Activity: Use the bridge photos to teach geometric concepts such as angles, shapes, and symmetry. Students can analyze the structures in the photos to identify geometric shapes and calculate areas and perimeters. A hands-on project could involve creating scale models of their chosen bridge type.
Science
Lesson Topic: Forces and Structures
Activity: Discuss the forces acting on bridges (compression, tension, and shear). Use the photos to illustrate how different bridge designs distribute these forces. Students can conduct experiments using materials like straws or popsicle sticks to build their own bridges and test their strength.
History and Social Studies
Lesson Topic: The Evolution of Bridge Design
Activity: Create a timeline of bridge construction through history, using the photos to represent key developments. Students can research historical bridges and their significance, discussing how engineering advancements have impacted society and transportation.
Art
Lesson Topic: Aesthetics in Bridge Design
Activity: Analyze the artistic elements of bridges using the photos. Students can create their own artistic interpretations of a bridge by drawing or painting. Encourage them to incorporate elements of design, color, and form based on the bridges they studied.
Creative Writing
Lesson Topic: Bridges as Metaphors
Activity: Use the bridge photos as inspiration for a creative writing assignment. Students can write short stories or poems that incorporate themes of connection, journeys, or overcoming obstacles, using the bridge imagery to enhance their narratives.
Environmental Studies
Lesson Topic: Impact of Bridges on Ecosystems
Activity: Discuss the environmental considerations of building bridges. Use the photos to explore the effects of bridges on wildlife and natural landscapes. Students can research a local bridge and present on its environmental impact and any conservation efforts related to it.
These examples demonstrate how the photos of bridges can serve as versatile tools in lesson plans, fostering engagement and deeper understanding across various subjects.
I have designed a Thinking Hat Detention Reflection Worksheet. What makes it special? It makes the student think about their actions from 6 different angles. It looks as the positives, the negatives, the facts, the feelings, the future and where their actions might have been correct (thinking creatively).
Then there is an interesting thought web to complete on the back of it. It is just a nice way to reflect on the actions without getting angry or being punished with more work etc...
