Decimal Division Bingo Activity

(0)
Engaging bingo activity based on decimal division. Bingo is always popular with pupils and I have regularly used them in my lessons - my students have often requested them, or that we do them again after the first go. Pupils can either draw a 3 x 3 grid in their book, or you can print off some of the blank grids at the start of the powerpoint. They then fill their grid with a selection of the bingo question answers. Can play for both a line and a full house to extend the game or keep pupils interested if their questions aren't coming up often. For replayability, the slide questions can be rearranged so they come up in a different order.

Order of Operations Blockbusters Game

(0)
Fun and engaging class game based on the old TV show Blockbusters, with questions on using the order of operations. These range from fairly basic ones, to questions including square roots, and cubing. Split the class into two teams, blue and white. The blue team must try to create a connected blue line from left to right, the white team must try to do the same from top to bottom. Click on the letters to link to the questions, if the answering team gets it right then click “Game board” to get back to the start, and click on the appropriate colour for that team to turn the tile blue or white.

Three times tables bingo games based in Powerpoint. Pupils pick 9 numbers out of the possible answers and place them in a 3 x 3 grid - these can either be drawn by the pupils themselves or some blank ones are provided on the first slide. First one includes only 1-5 times tables, the second has various questions from the 2-8 and the third contains questions from the 2 to 10 times tables. Can easily be reused just by swapping the order of the slides in the presentation.

Times Tables Fill the Grid Settlers

(0)
Three lesson starters, easily editable, practicing times tables. Just play the slideshow as pupils enter and it will continue on a loop. Two squares of a 4 x 4 grid will be revealed on each slide, showing a times tables question. Pupils have to draw the grid and complete it with the correct answers in each square. Engages pupils as they need to pay careful attention to see which answer goes where, and settles them ready for the lesson ahead - this activity is ideal for low ability pupils as it gives them an activity they can access right at the start of the lesson.
Decimal Subtraction Treasure Hunt Activity

Decimal Subtraction Treasure Hunt Activity

(0)
Treasure Hunt activity designed for pupils to practice decimal subtraction. Pupils can complete the task individually or in pairs. The cards should be cut out and stuck around the wall of the classroom. Pupils go and stand near one of the cards (in a pair or individually) - possibly whiteboards should be given to them for working out - and they start with that card. When they answer the question on the card they go and find the card that has that answer on, making a note of the order of the cards (the card numbers are at the bottom of the cards). When they get round to the card they started at, pupils are done and come to you to check their work. The correct order is included in the documents so you can see quickly where any mistakes have been made. Blank answer sheets are also included for pupils to write down the card numbers.

Factorising Quadratic Expressions Full Lesson

Lesson plan aimed at higher sets on factorising quadratics, including approximate timings for each slide. WARNING: Lesson is made for SMARTBoard technology, NOT Promethean ActivInspire. Lesson begins with a six question starter recapping previous topics (easily adjustable if needed), including an answers slide. Pupils are then taken through recapping what factors are and encouraged to think about both positive and negative factors. Pupils then shown examples (which will need to be completed by the teacher) and given three levels of differentiated questions. The next slide contains the first couple of answers for the easy and medium sections to be shown a few minutes into the independent working period. There is a printable extension page complete with example for simplifying quadratic algebraic fractions for pupils who are comfortable with all levels of factorising. After independent working the learning is extended by solving quadratic equations by factorising, complete with a final differentiated question page to work on this skill.

Decimal Multiplication Blockbusters Game

Fun and engaging blockbusters activity for the classroom based on the classic TV show. This particular activity is designed to help pupils consolidate their knowledge of multiplying decimal numbers. Split the class into two teams and assign each one to be either blue or white. Each team takes turns to choose a letter that will then reveal a question. If they get the question right make the tile their colour by clicking the blue or white boxes on each tile. The blue team win if they make a connected row across the screen, and the white team win if they make one going down. Because the blue team have another tile to complete, they should go first.

The files are in Powerpoint format so they can be used on any system.

Adding and Subtracting Negatives Lesson

Full lesson plan on how to add and subtract negative numbers. Topic is explained initially through putting in and then removing -1’s from a number to show how the sums decrease then increase. This then moves into the ± and – rules. There are many practice questions for independent work, with some worded extension questions followed by a GCSE style question for everyone to attempt. The lesson is summed up with a “Spot the Mistakes” plenary to help catch out some misconceptions. Pupils must identify where the mistakes are (if there are any) and provide written feedback on how to improve. EDIT: I have added in a second plenary option, an Always Sometimes Never activity to encourage discussion and mastery and help uncover misconceptions.
