REDOX lesson 2 - Disproportionation reactions - AS Chemistry

(3)
This is a lesson on using oxidation numbers to determine if a reaction is a redox reaction, disproportionation reaction or symproportionation reaction (opposite of disproportionation). Symproportionation is included to develop understanding and is not required by AS Chemistry specifications. The starter is the engaging visual elephant toothpaste demo. Answers on slide 17 are colour coded and animated. I have another lesson on TES where students calculate oxidation numbers. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.

Earthquakes, tsunami, P and S waves graded task

(2)
This is a GCSE graded task sheet on earthquakes, tsunami, P and S waves designed for independent learning. Students play the role of a geological scientist working for company that is designing an earthquake detection system. They need to put 10 detectors around Japan and explain as part of a Dragons Den pitch how they can detect a tsunami. There are differentiated websites provided for research. Please leave feedback to how this is useful or how it can be improved.

AFL strategies 6 - Tarsia fun science activities

(2)
This is the 6th of my AFL strategies. Tarsia are an excellent and fun way of carrying out AFL. This is because the shape expected is generated if the correct answers are matched up. These are science tarsia and more of these will be added. Please leave feedback and rate the resources if you find them useful or have suggestions as to how they can be improved.

Science comprehension task - diabetes

(0)
This is a detailed comprehension task that will push able students. The text on the discovery of insulin was taken from the Nobel Prize website. A brief glossary is provided. There are 4 levelled questions (Level 7 = A*).
Electromagnetic Spectrum level assessed task

Electromagnetic Spectrum level assessed task

(1)
This is am ICT research level assessed task that has been designed for key stage 3 levels 5 to 7. It would also work well as a GCSE task for a middle ability group grades D to B. The starter is the fun YouTube video that gets students discussing and explaining what light is. Differentiation is through keyword, website and level. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.
AS Chemistry - equilibrium

AS Chemistry - equilibrium

(5)
This is a lesson on equilibrium for AS chemistry. There are lesson grades C to A with clear AFL tasks including a literacy-based Just a Minute plenary. There is an exam focus throughout with the grade A task getting students to apply their understanding to new reactions. The video is the TED Ed Daniel Dulek video on the Haber Process. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.
Mole calculations personal learning checklist

Mole calculations personal learning checklist

(3)
This is a personal learning checklist created for AS chemistry to check understanding of mole calculations. A comprehensive list of AS mole calculations is provided. Students identify what they can do after a lesson or homework as they progress through a topic. At the end both the student and teacher sign to say that the student can complete do these tasks. This is excellent for making sure students thoroughly understand a topic. Please rate and leave feedback.

Peer editing templates useful for building on AFL

(3)
Templates are provided that can be readily modified. One template is a GCSE revision template where students are guided to create their own exam questions and peer edit answers. The second template is useful for writing Blooms-leveled answers at Key Stage 3 and includes a wordbank. The third is an AS Chemistry exam question with keyword glossary. All templates include written instructions for students. Peer editing is great when combined with AFL strategies before and after the activity.

Redox definitions tarsia puzzle

(1)
This powerpoint contains a starter, learning objectives and definitions match up puzzle for an A2 chemistry lesson on redox. This can be taught before half cells and electrode potentials. Slide 8 is the tarsia that can be modified. Slide 9 is the slide to be printed and cut out (possibly laminated). Feedback to my TES inbox please.

Gifted and talented series 2 - Lesson menu

I came across the idea for lesson menus from a CPD session that I attended and have since put them into over half of my total lessons. I am putting together a series of resources to help more able students in the classroom and I will be adding to this series over the coming year. This resource has been used for a Year 7 lesson on the history of the cell. Please provide feedback to: rowan.savage@hotmail.com. I will amend this with suggested improvements later in the year.

Acids and alkalis word and symbol equations from pictures KS3

(3)
This is a lesson on word and symbol equations for the KS3 acids and bases topic. Levels 4 to high level 6 are covered. This would also suit GCSE classes. Students replace pictures with words to write word equations in their books or on whiteboards. The level 6 task is writing symbol equations where the formulae of salts is provided. There are a variety of differentiated worksheets. There are acids and bases labels than be cut and laminated for a kinesthetic activity. They need to add water. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.

Drawing graphs levelled tickbox checklist

This is a levelled checklist for graph skills that year 7 and 8 students should be able to do. I use this the second time that I teach year 7 graph skills. It helps promote inclusion. Higher ability pupils should be able to complete all of the checklist to a very high level of ability. Feedback to my TES inbox please.
