This lesson is designed to get students thinking about cultural "norms" and all the different ways good etiquette, customs and rituals are practiced around the world. There are 48 simple statements on a chart for students to ponder in small groups and then guess as to where these practices are considered the norm. Survey is written in English so it will work for teachers of any foreign language, as well as ELL classes. The survey will open up students minds for the wide variety of cultural diversity, and for ELL students give them an opportunity to share out cultural norms from their home countries. This activity would be excellent for the first day of school to open the dialogue and get students interacting. Download also includes an answer key for you to share with students afterwards.

This 40 minute video from the history channel give a reasonably unbiased view of the Aztec empire and an effort to understand their cultural practices as well as documents their conquest by Cortez and why Spain was successful in defeating the Aztec. Video works well for a sub day lesson plan or as supporting information when studying the Aztec. Video is in English, questions are chronologically ordered.

This film is set at the turn of the century in the hills of Provence outside of Marseilles and is based on a true story of the childhood of a French film director. In French, with subtitles available in either English or French, its not rated and it totally suitable for French students in either middle or high school. There is a sequel to this film, My Mother's Castle, if you students enjoy this one. Movie guide contains 36 questions chronologically ordered to accompany the film which is 2 hrs. in length. Questions are provided in both French and English.

This 16 question survey for students is designed to be an icebreaker and review activity in the first week of classes. Questions use preterite and imperfect so this activity works best for 3rd year or higher students. Students answer the questions about their summer, then interview a partner in Spanish. They select information to compose an introduction and present their partner to the class. Activity takes one class period from start to finish, and works at reviewing vocabulary, past tense verbs, comparatives and interrogatives. Students use reading, writing and speaking to complete.

This 96 question reading guide accompanies the book La Línea by Ann Jaramillo. The story is fiction but based on facts she learned from her own ELL students. This story chronicles the perilous journey of two Mexican children heading North to reunite with their parents. This book is in English but is full of Spanish words and would be a great filler activity to read in a lower level Spanish class for a few minutes daily or to use in a middle school classroom or with ELL learners who could connect with the story. The book is highly recommended and positively reviewed. Its a cliff hanger in parts and a tear jerker in others, and should invite students to be introspective about the hot topic of illegal immigrants in the US. This book would also work well with the film "La Misma Luna" or the documentary "WETBACK".

These are simple step by step notes on how to tell time in Spanish. Each section has practice examples for students to write time on the hour, half hour, quarter hours and random in between times. Page two has blank clock faces where students can practice writing times you read to them, and there is a partner practice where students can ask and answer times in Spanish speaking capital cities. Four pages total to practice telling time reading, writing, listening and speaking. This lesson is best suited for students that are just beginning telling time, or for those students in 2nd year re-visiting the topic for a day to brush up their skills.

This assignment works best for students in SPanish II who have reviewed usage of verbs like GUSTAR or for SPanish I students after the have already learned adjectives and basic regular verb conjugation. Students create an original poem about something they love and then present it to the class. Packet contains parameters of assignment, tips for students on composing their thoughts, revision/proofing code list for peer correction or teacher proofing and grading rubric. This lesson works well as a final assessment of GUSTAR or related verbs and students enjoy presenting their works out loud in a Poetry slam. Plan at least two days for creation and proofing, one day for final revision and 1-2 days to present depending on class size.

This download will print onto Standard office mailing labels. There is a wide variety of clock times in Spanish and with numbers for students to match up. There are 6 rounds to the game, just print out the labels, stick them on colored notecards ( 1 sheet of labels for each color of notecards) and you have 5 sets of puzzles kids can use in class to race against each other. Rotate the puzzles after each round and practice telling time for 30 minutes! There is even a challenge round where clock times are given using military times. Great for practice after students have been working with telling time for a couple of days or as a review before the quiz. You can also use each deck for students to play MEMORY in small groups at tables, or as flashcard study aids for students who need extra practice. REMINDER: YOU WILL NEED TO LOAD AVERY 5160 size mailing labels to get these to print properly!

This fun reading activity is designed for level II of higher Spanish students who have already seen comparisons and stem changing verbs. Students read through two columns of choices and mark their preferences on a cute diagram to determine if they are more "left brain" or "right brain". Good activity for a sub plan, or as a reading practice. Afterwards students can compare their drawings with friends or you can divide up the class to see who is more left or right.

This short but powerful documentary Recycled Life presents the sad reality of the thousands of people who live and work in the Guatemala City Dump. Narrated by Edward James Olmos in English with interviews in Spanish of Guaejero dump workers, this film presents the sad day to day reality of the thousands of people who recycle millions of pounds of trash every day. The film will most certainly provoke discussion with students and for many serve as the first time they actually see the kind of poverty that motivates immigrants to risk their lives to come here. Movie guide contains 17-18 questions in chronological order and a couple of personal opinion/reactions. Guide is in English and Spanish. Amazing film, it will bring you to tears, while still leaving you with a sense of pride and dignity that these humble people maintain intact despite horrific circumstances.

These are two quick activities to practice using GUSTAR with basic vocabulary of foods, clothing and some basic verbs. The first activity is an interview grid for students to interview peers in a large group. Students inital boxes to record their preferences. They visit many different websites to acquire vocabulary, become acquainted with events of the big day, plan their own Quince event (keeping a budget) shop for a dress and ultimately connect the Quince experience through personal reflection. Adventure takes at least one day in the lab, could be two or assigned as homework. Adventure comes with a page of useful links that have all been tested (working) and are kid appropriate. Questions are in English, this lesson is best suited for beginning levels of Spanish.

Activity takes about 10-15 minutes depending on their ability level. Best suited for Spanish I or II. Makes a good warm up activity if you are in the chapter about school.
