Writing Unit: The Iron Man by Ted Hughes
This engaging writing unit, inspired by Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man, develops a range of key writing skills:
Descriptive Settings: Pupils will begin by writing vivid descriptions of the eerie and atmospheric settings from the story, focusing on sensory details and rich vocabulary.
Wanted Poster: Using their descriptive skills, pupils will create a wanted poster for the Iron Man, detailing his appearance, traits, and the potential “dangers” he poses.
Debate: Pupils will engage in a class debate, exploring whether the Iron Man is a hero or a threat, practising persuasive speaking and writing techniques.
Letter Writing: Pupils will take on the role of a character from the story, writing a letter to the authorities or another character to express their viewpoint about the Iron Man.
Menu: In a creative twist, pupils will design a menu for the Iron Man, inspired by his unusual eating habits, incorporating imaginative ideas and humour.
This unit offers a mix of imaginative and practical writing activities, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a love for storytelling.
In Week 2, pupils will delve into symmetry and further explore 3D shapes. They will identify lines of symmetry in 2D shapes, using practical tools like mirrors and folding activities to reinforce understanding. For 3D shapes, they will investigate and describe their properties, focusing on edges, faces, and vertices. Hands-on tasks and sorting activities will help pupils deepen their understanding and apply their knowledge in fun, interactive ways. Lessons are fully aligned with the White Rose Maths Scheme and include adaptive resources to support all learners.

In Week 6, pupils will bring their narratives to life by completing their stories based on the plans developed in the previous week. They will focus on writing in full sentences, using subordination and coordination to create more complex and engaging narratives. Pupils will incorporate rich descriptive language and key features of storytelling, such as dialogue, to add depth to their characters and settings. Editing and revising will also be introduced, encouraging pupils to refine their work and ensure their narratives are cohesive and captivating. Support resources are included to guide all pupils in achieving their best outcomes.

This six-week unit, based on Yokki and the Parno Gry, guides pupils through developing key writing skills:
Week 1: Introduction to the story and exploring descriptive language.
Week 2: Crafting descriptions using subordination and coordination.
Week 3: Understanding key features of descriptive writing and making inferences.
Week 4: Oral storytelling, focusing on retelling the story and describing settings.
Week 5: Planning a narrative using the Boxed-Up Method to structure ideas.
Week 6: Writing and completing their narratives, incorporating rich language and refining their work.
