This is a differentiated, multi-skill, KS3 project which combines wood work (finger/butt joints), electronics (soldering skills, circuit, components & colour-coded resistors), 2D design, graphics (board game) and product design (a net, packaging and packaging symbols), including homework tasks. It helps students to choose their own level of difficulty in design & manufacture, to take control of their learning, to work individually and as a team, to peer-assess each other’s work, to test & evaluate their work based on the project activities, and to critically analyse & evaluate. In addition, it teaches the use of tally charts, bar charts & flow charts.

Work individually using your group&'s adapted image to create a spectator&';s hat that will provide TV advertising coverage for Mc Donald's during the Olympics. Design street poster using adapted image. Present your work to the class. Critically evaluate valuate work.

This project takes several lessons to complete, which would include several stages: Research, Product Analysis, Identification of your own Target market & Success criteria. Design a new promotional watch using a range of graphic communications. Evaluate your watch against your own success criteria and to create an advertisement to promote your watch.

Investigate the existing Paul Smith designs and identify his style. Investigate about monogram and jigsaw. Design the key-ring of your own initials based on P. Smith design style. Make a sustainable key-ring by re-using scrap /left over plastic (acrylic), hand tools and the scroll saw. Complete mini-test at the end of the activity.

KS3 lesson allows Y7 pupils to understand different wood joints and to model example wood joints, to work in a team in the 'factory' to cut and assemble the longest & most accurate Dovetail joint. The lesson included a range of different short activities (such as modeling cardboard joints, the quiz 'Who wants to be a Millionaire?' and the 'Dovetail Challenge' competition) to reinforce pupils' understanding and the knowledge of wood joints and its use.
