Required from January 2025

TLR 2.2 for Curriculum Leader of Music

More about the role:

Music currently sits within the Faculty of Performing Arts at Balshaw’s. However, for a candidate with the right experience and evidence of excellent student progress and attainment, the role of Curriculum Leader for Music will be made available. For a music teacher with less evidence of excellent outcomes, you will be able to teach music within the leadership of the Performing Arts Faculty.

About Music at Balshaw’s:

Music is taught throughout KS3. At KS4 Level 2 Music BTEC is offered to all students as an option. There is a strong tradition of music at Balshaw’s. There are a range of choirs (Chamber Choir, Junior Choir, Staff Choir) and different ensembles (Balshaw’s Brass, Rock Band).

The music room is well equipped and has 5 different adjoining practice rooms. Significant investment has been made in iPads and Apple desktops. However, all students at Balshaw’s also have their own laptops, so the development of Ableton would be a good area for development within the department. There are established links with peripatetic musicians for guitar, brass, drumming, singing and piano.

Music forms a key part of our worship and each year, for the past three years, we have hosted a whole school musical production. These have included: We Will Rock You, Oliver Jnr, Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat, The Sound of Music and Oklahoma. Balshaw's also hosts an annual event called Balfest, featuring live music and performances.

Balshaw’s has a proud range of alumni working in the arts. From Oscar winning scriptwriters such as Tom Bidwell (My Mad Fat Diary, Watership Down, Casualty) to Oscar winning special effects designer Kim Libreri (Star Wars, The Matrix and recently the game Fortnite). A large number of other former Balshavians are currently working in major productions all over the country.

This is an exciting opportunity to come and bring music to life in an outstanding school which has a passion for excellence in the creative arts.

The closing date for this role is Sunday 6th October at Midnight.

About Balshaw's Church Of England High School

Balshaw’s is a mixed, comprehensive, Church of England secondary school without sixth form situated in Leyland, Lancashire. It is a community state school operating under the Diocese of Blackburn. An average-sized school, it will provide 925 places for students aged 11-16, when fully subscribed.

Balshaw's was founded as a charity school in Leyland in June 1782 by Richard Balshaw. It moved to its current Church Road site in September 1932. Although the school has no official sixth-form, it works closely with nearby Runshaw College, which was originally set up in 1974 to cater for school-leavers from Balshaw's and Parklands High School.

Principal

Steven Haycocks

Values and Vision

Richard Balshaw wanted the school to be a supportive and inclusive place that benefited the whole child, and his view remains important today. The school has high expectations of pupils and aims for excellence, at the same time as upholding its Christian faith and creating healthy working relationships with parents and local churches, businesses, industries and the community. Balshaw's motto “Non sibi sed aliis”, which translates as “not for ourselves but for others”, reflects the selfless and tolerant nature of the school .

Ofsted

"Leaders are ambitious for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Pupils know that their teachers have high standards for their academic achievement and their behaviour. The majority of pupils work hard to rise to these expectations. They behave responsibly and they achieve well. The atmosphere around school is calm and respectful.  Pupils feel safe.  Leaders and governors share a clear vison for the quality of education."
