Island School is looking to appoint a full-time Deputy Head of Art in Music to start in Jan 2025 at our recently relocated new campus located at Mid-levels, Hong Kong. The teacher will carry the teaching and learning responsibilities (TLR3) within the creative arts faculty. 

The successful candidate will have the drive, commitment and expertise to head the Music Department in the development of dynamic music-making, fostering a passion for music among students and ensuring a high-quality educational experience. We are looking for someone who is genuinely innovative and inspirational. 

The person appointed will be fully conversant with contemporary thinking in the field of Music Education and must have a clear appreciation of the opportunities afforded by Music for personal growth and development. They will have experience in the use of technology as a tool for a musician and for a teacher. In addition, the successful candidate will be aware of how learning Music can be enhanced through extra-curricular opportunities.


Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Development: Design and implement a dynamic and inclusive music curriculum that aligns with MYP, IGCSE, and IB standards, catering to a wide range of student abilities and interests
  • Teaching and Learning: Deliver engaging music lessons across various year groups, promoting creativity, critical thinking, and musical skills. Support and mentor music teachers in their professional development
  • Performance Opportunities: Organize, coordinate, and promote a variety of musical performances, including concerts, recitals, and competitions, which are highlights of the school calendar. Encourage student participation and showcase their talents
  • Extracurricular Activities (ECA): Oversee and take an active part in the range of the school’s ECAs, including ensembles, orchestras, choirs, etc, fostering a lively musical culture within the school
  • Assessment and Reporting: Develop and implement effective assessment strategies to monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback to students and parents
  • Community Engagement: Collaborate with other departments, parents, local musicians, and the wider community to enhance the music program and provide students with diverse performance opportunities. Communicate with parents, careers and colleagues in an effective and informative manner
  • Department Management: Manage the music department's budget, resources, and facilities, ensuring a well-equipped and effective learning environment
  • Professional Development: Stay informed about the latest trends and best practices in music education and promote continuous professional growth for self and staff, and to lead the development of the music technology and utilisation of the learning technologies


Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education (preferably in Music Education) or any Bachelor's degree with a postgraduate teaching qualification in Music Education
  • Proven experience teaching music within a recognized educational organization, preferably within an international or IB school setting
  • Strong leadership and organisational skills, with a commitment to fostering an active and creative learning environment.
  • A commitment to the extra-curricular life of the school
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively as part of a team
  • Proficiency in multiple musical instruments and knowledge of various music genres
  • The desire to embrace faculty-wide professional development and alternative curriculum models
  • Knowledge and experience in utilizing Learning Technologies in Teaching
