It is possible that, for the right candidate, the role may include the opportunity to gain experience of classroom teaching, in addition to the duties outlined below.

The post is residential and could be combined with the role of Deputy Head of a boarding House, or an academic tutor, depending on availability and suitability of the candidate.

Responsible to: The Director of Sport. Through them the Head (with boarding duties, to the relevant Head of House and Director of Boarding).

3. To contribute to and develop the co-curricular programme in sport, including after-school practices

4. To represent the school at weekend fixtures

5. To provide cover for teachers and other ad hoc duties as required at the direction of the Head

6. To provide administrative support for specific areas of the School, as directed by the Head

7. To assist with boarders’ trips, boarding duties and involvement with the evening programme and with other School and House duties as appropriate

8. To provide administrative support for the Sports Department and in other areas of the School as required

9. To take on other tasks and school, House and boarding duties as directed by the Head

Key Areas of Responsibility:

To provide expertise in a specific area to support the activities and coaching or teaching programme in that area.

Sport: Each Graduate Assistant will be required to help supervise, coach, referee and organise major games and activities for three terms. The main sports at the School are rugby, hockey, cricket and tennis (boys) and hockey, netball, cricket and tennis (girls). The School is looking for expertise across a range of sports but with aptitude in one or more sports featuring in the Cranbrook programme.

An ability or willingness to assist with other areas of school life (e.g. the Duke of Edinburgh programme or CCF) could be an advantage.

House Duties: GAs will be on duty in a boarding house for 1-2 nights each week. Duty nights are arranged by rota by the Head of House. This carries with it an additional allowance.

Boarding Duties: GAs will be expected to participate in the weekend boarding trips and activities programme and support the wider boarding community as required by the Director of Boarding. This may involve, for example, evening duties in the Coach House (boarders’ tuck shop), or supervising evening activities (e.g. the Sports Hall).

School Duties: GAs will be part of the main school duty rota at break and lunchtimes and may be called up to cover lessons on occasion.

Terms and Conditions

There will be additional opportunities to contribute to the life of the School by helping in the organisation of events or in other ways which will utilise or develop the skills of the GA.

The GA is expected to work 40 hours in the week to support the area of school indicated. The spread of these hours will be agreed with the Head. In addition, in return for House and boarding duties indicated above, GAs will be provided with free accommodation, including all bills except personal WiFi. They will also be provided with free meals throughout term time and have free access to the School’s sports facilities.

The salary is £16,000 per annum, term-time only, plus accommodation. The contract is one year only, with renewal at the end of the year at the Head’s discretion.

Cranbrook School is a mixed state grammar school with 900+ pupils aged 11-18 years, including around 260 boarders. It was founded in 1518. Day pupils come from within 5.28 miles of the school, following a test to judge their suitability for a grammar school education. Boarders are admitted from a wide area, having sat the same test. Although it is a selective school, Cranbrook admits a wider ability range than many other grammar schools. We provide a challenging and supportive curriculum so that students of all abilities are catered for. The value-added scores that are achieved each year bear testimony to the success of our provision.

Pupils join at the age of 11 or 13, and in Year 10 they start GCSEs in nine or ten subjects. Most students then qualify for the Sixth Form, this being supplemented by a healthy intake into Year 12 from other schools. All Sixth Formers take at least three A levels and can choose the EPQ and other qualifications in addition.

For a state school, the facilities are impressive. Within the seventy acres of school grounds are found the six boarding houses, the Queen’s Hall Theatre (used for assemblies, school productions, visiting theatre companies and concerts), a large library and lecture theatre. Sports facilities include a large sports hall, dance studio, cardio gym, weights room, heated outdoor swimming pool, squash courts and extensive playing fields and facilities for games - hockey, rugby, cricket, netball, tennis and athletics – as well as an astro-turf pitch. The school also possesses a Performing Arts Centre that houses a drama studio and music practice rooms, and a vibrant Sixth Form Centre. The school boasts an Observatory named after Dr Piers Sellers OBE, an Old Cranbrookian and NASA astronaut.
